It's interesting to see how many PBS-related stations were available on NY-NJ cable systems. WNET 13 is the main affiliate but 21 WLIW on Long Island and WNJM 50 in Montclair NJ also had schedules of mostly PBS shows as well. Then some PBS shows also were seen on 31 WNYC-TV, owned by the City of New York and on 25 WNYE-TV, owned by the New York City Board of Education.

A few years later, Mayor Giuliani sold off 31. The city still owns 25, although today, it runs some of its own shows and public television programs from other sources, with only a handful of PBS shows each week. WNET 13 eventually got control over 21 and 50, so the three stations run schedules that try not to overlap. I always wonder what it would be like to live in a market where the cable system only had one PBS station? How boring!

When I lived in Westchester County NY, we also got a sixth PBS station, WEDW 49 Bridgeport, part of Connecticut Public Television. Eventually, the cable system dropped the channel, claiming it had trouble getting a clear signal. But I think the cable system just figured we didn't need SIX PBS stations, so it could use the channel space for something else.

Very often, especially in the South, state PBS networks have a mandate to cover the entire state, with the inevitable spillover in areas near other states, and sometimes viewers can get PBS from two or three states. Until WOSU in Columbus OH sold off their satellite WPBO in Portsmouth, viewers in the tri-state area around Huntington WV could easily get three OTA PBS outlets, four if they were in the northern part of the market near WOUB Athens. Viewers in southeastern Kentucky could also get WSBN Norton VA, which was a satellite of WBRA Roanoke.

Hard to go wrong with getting several PBS affiliates. For reasons intrinsic to commercial television (i.e., network exclusivity, with a handful of exceptions, within a single market), you wouldn't have that kind of network duplication in such markets, unless it were a case of multiple markets and the core cities were fairly close to one another (Cincinnati/Dayton, Washington/Baltimore, etc.).
