Great idea by CD 101.9

It seems all I post about is CD 101.9 anymore, eh? LOL Well, I guess it's primarily because they're always doing something different, and I love what they're doing this weekend. They recently turned 18 years old (as a SJ station), so they're "celebrating their Smooth Jazz heritage" by featuring older and rarer Smooth Jazz cuts throughout the Labor Day weekend. I love this because #1, a lot of other formats do these type of specialty weekends, ("Back to the 80's weekend", "Retro Weekend", etc. etc.) so why shouldn't Smooth Jazz encourage extended listening over the weekend too? #2, it's about time a Smooth Jazz station does something to cater to the Smooth Jazz fan. Practically every Smooth Jazz station in a large market across the country is decreasing the instrumental to vocal ratio and in many ways is screwing the Smooth Jazz fan to cater to the other audiences. Obviously, Smooth Jazz fans alone aren't going to carry a Smooth Jazz radio station, there just aren't that many, but, at least on a weekend programming wise, I don't think it's going to cause mass dents in ratings to focus around some "hardcore" Smooth Jazz programming. In fact, maybe it'll even help. Great Pat Metheny song on now I haven't heard in ages.

BTW...kudos to the legendary Elevator_Operatr for this idea (maybe Blake Lawrence contacted him?). He discussed this very concept to me during a phone conversation several months ago. I suggest he try to collect royalties on it. <P ID="signature">______________

Not a bad holiday weekend idea. But one of the main problems with SJ radio today is the lack of new material. Add to that the fact that stations no longer tell you the title/artist of the songs, Contemporary Jazz artists are being seriously hurt.

The increase of R&B vocals is certainly not improving the situation. I have no problem with R&B, but Motown is NOT SJ!

Lack of new material? I can't keep up with all the music I am receiving. It's lack of researched material.

That is exactly the problem. Plenty of new material, but it is NOT on the air. Why does every song have to be "researched" before it is played? Hire a music director with a taste for SJ, let him listen to the label's suggested "singles" then play them if they fit. There is no excuse for only 1 new song per month.

> Let's get away from the promoters singles. What a shame that the public has to rely on someone elses ear for a good song on a cd. Case in point, While the new Walter Beasley single is good, the sleeper on the cd is track 11 playtime. Anyone heard it on commercial radio yet? Personally I think it has potential #1 status. Give it a listen.
