Format DID influence...

Earlier this week I needed to buy a new car, made urgent by the need
to get my wife settled in a new home in a new city while I flew off to
a family funeral across the country.

Driving into the nearby "big city" in a rental car I was scanning the
AM dial and stumbled onto standards on KHAR, Anchorage. Within a
few miles I caught a commercial for a Ford dealer so made their showroom
the first serious stop. Within an hour had bought a 2006 Ford Escape.

On the way back to the smaller town where I now live I kept the radio
set on KHAR and my wife took notes. We now have a list of places we'll
be going for furniture and various household goods when I get back from
this trip.

Does that qualify as people well over 55 having disposable income and
actually spending it, influenced by a radio format that appealed to us?

Yes, I did seek out the sales manager (who does media selection) at the
Ford dealer and make sure he understood how we came to walk in his door.
Did that AFTER dropping the check on them.<P ID="signature">______________

Wow Les, how you'd make it past the age of 55????? Also how in heck do you drive a car with the oxygen tank by your side?? You mean they didn't take your license away when they found out you have cataracts AND a severe case of macular degeneration?? [:^D}

It sounds like the Standards station in Anchorage is in much better shape than those that were near me. Both have changed formats in the last few years. But when they were around (one was locally programmed and the other took Westwood One's old AM Only format service)I listened through static in the car, but I never heard them sell much I wanted or needed to buy. Both had small rosters of stable clients whose commercials aired all the time. One had a Buick dealer which was always one but I decided I wouldn't really rather have a Buick (or any GM sh__box). The other station had this financial planner (I always wondered how she could possibly meet with, let alone study the portfolios of, all the leads a major market station with a four something share would generate). Both had cruises to Alaska with DJs, long-term care insurance, and term life insurance, and retirement communities. No furniture or household goods, let alone consumables. Now, when I have the radio on, I listen to talk or news and I still don't often hear ads for anything I want or need, and if I do, the merchant is likely on the other side of town.

The natural air in rural Alaska us 87.236% oxygen so
no supplement needed.

License?

What's that?

Who "they"?

We usta have some "theys" but they were mistaken for moose
and killed/eaten. Easy to tell the difference when roasted;
crappy flavor. But in sausage with a bit of grizzly bear
it's impossible to tell.

I work for a duopoly in Melbourne, Australia, one News/Talk, the other Standards. I would totally agree with you there. There is nothing cheap about the products that are advertised. Of course the down side is the number of funeral directors and/or financial advisers that advertise with both stations. Lately it seems there is one (and quite often both) in every break.
