Favorite SD DJ/Announcer of All Time

Since the news in SD Radio is pretty slow, how about a bit of nostalgia. Who were your favorite DJs/Announcers of years past in San Diego. (This came to mind because of a post I saw below)

Happy Hare - A legend

'King' Jack Hayes - I use to love how he would interact with staffers coming into the studio while he was on the air "...Don't touch a King!!" (He and Hare most influenced my obsession for radio)

Perry Allen - As out there and irreverent as you could get.

Lee 'Baby' Simms - A God! He is what's missing in radio outside of morning drive today, personality, grit, just an incredible talent.

JoJo "Cookin'" Kincaid - A fireball!! Talk about lighting up radio, his spitfire presentation was second to none.

Brief Mention of Morning Shows (previously discussed) (my two cent addendum)

DSC- Best of All Time!!

Murphy & McKeever - From a tiny little box in Kearny Mesa...

Jeff & Jer - A little saccharin never killed anybody (I could be wrong)

Best Radio Station (previously discussed) (my two cent addendum)

Q106 - The excitement that radio station generated in it's peak and the ratings it drew were awesome. Too bad we do not have an Adult Top 40 (rhythmic 'leaning' not Alternative leaning Hot AC) that could recapture the feel of the early Q106.

KCBQ - Buzz Bennett's Q - Seems to be a pattern.... KCBQ plays fewer commercials. Again a station with high energy, exciting, entertaining through all dayparts.

SD Radio today, IMHO, misses what was the best of our radio in the past. Throughout all dayparts, talking to the listener, not the mike. IPOD'S are IPOD's. One Jack-FM's enough. We need a Q.

You said it!
The trouble is, music intenesive radio today is less personality driven, and more of a soundtrack. I hate to say it, but the only difference between a lot of FM stations now are thevoices who do the sweepers. Afterthat, insert clock, insert format, you're done. I think San Diego has become a reflection of that. Lets hope that the folks that just took over Z90, 91X and Magic put some life back into he market!

Favorite SD announcer of all time?
It's a tie, between Jeff and Jer, IMHO!
Bobby Rich and the Rich Bros, a close second!

In first place, for me is Dave Mason. All-around great guy!

Second is DSC.

However, I've been listening alot more to 91X lately... they're doing good stuff there.

Can't fault any of your choices. To the list I'd add:

- Shotgun Tom, of course! On KGB, on KCBQ, on B-100... pretty much a legend and a guy who knew how to entertain and relate to his listeners.

- Phil Flowers. One of my favorite people of all time, a genuinely nice guy and great talent.

- Roger Christian. Can't forget "The Magic Christian!" Loved him on the Q, loved him on XPRS. (And in LA, of course.)

- Lenny Mitchell from the Q and KSEA. Another undersung hero.

- Mason Dixon! LOVED that guy! One of the best nighttime jocks ever!

Don't let anybody at Channel 933 hear you saying that, LOL!

Michael Boss of the Mighty 690, later KLZZ.

Lee, your choices are very good. I will focus on my
childhood-teen years. San Diego in the late 60's early
70's was easily the most innovative radio market in
the country.

Lee Baby Simms (KCBQ)-years ahead of his time,
soulful, hip, & topical. Dominated the market.
A master story teller with no peer.

Bobby Ocean-(KGB years)Like a boss jock on acid.

Jimmy Rabbitt-with Simms led the market with 30-40 shares
as KCBQ beat Boss Radio.

Royce Johnson (KDEO KOGO) An incredible talent who came
to KDEO after doing mornings at KFRC, a communicator this
market has never seen the likes of again. RIP

Bobby Wayne (KCBQ) Did dozens of character voices, and
created a theatre of mind effect, also introduced San
Diego to heavier music on his funderground show. Instrumental
in the turnaround of KCBQ to #1. Later worked at WCBS-FM NY.

K.O. Bayley/Bob Elliot (KCBQ KGB KDEO) Soulful, funny & feared
Boss jock. His delivery was priceless,he was gansta before there
was such a thing. Unlike most of todays CHR jocks, he was not a
poser, he lived it. Ex boxer, hung out with bikers, and knocked
back a few while on the air. He recorded his own version of Shaft
while at KGB. Later worked Detroit, NY, and San Francisco.

Perry Allen- (KDEO) The most literate and funny morning show of its time.
Perry did it and likely better & funnier than anyone does it today.
He did prank calls before it was against the law not to identify yourself,
even calling his competitors live on the air. Perry later went to KFI,
where he filled in for Lohman & Barkley, and did an early evening show.

Favorite stations KCBQ/KGB. It's hard to compare eras, since Q and KGB
had 40-60 percent of the total market back in the 60's early 70's.
When jocks started emulating each other and doing "radio speak" it
started going downhill. Today the imaging voice is often heard more
than the jock, and in many cases unfortunately that is a good thing.

Lee's popped up in this list a few times now. And he deserves it! WHat an amazing talent. I last heard him doing PM Drive in San Francisco about 2-3 years ago, and he was a fresh and fun as ever... anyone know where he is now?
