Czech Republic Medium Wave Daytime Band Scans

For the past month I have been travelling throughout Europe, visiting Munich (Oktoberfest), Prague/Ostrava in Czech Republic, Budapest, Hungary and Vienna, Austria.

I did bring along my old trusty SONY ICF 2010 portable radio in hope of doing some radio listening/DXing. Unfortunately the only time I had some time to turn the radio on was in Prague and Ostrava. It was at these two locations that I managed to do a complete daytime bandscans of the Long Wave and Medium Wave bands. The electrical noise conditions at the Prague hotel I was staying was very bad making reception very difficult. On the other hand I had better luck in my hometown of Ostrava in the northeastern part of Czech Republic. There I was able to scan the band for two consecutive days with much better results.

Here are the results of my band scans.

One thing is for certain. The AM band in that part of Europe is filled with stations from Romania.

I've heard the 1530 Romanian "actualitati" transmitter here in alaska after KFBK skywave burned off.

1413 is a REGULAR here.

1053 wo0uld be well audible if it didnt fall square on the 3rd harm, onic of my 1kw NDB on 350khz

Hometown Ostrava?
I was there in the late 90s a few times, together with my father who was born in Krnov ('Jägerndorf'), only 50 km NW to Ostrava ;-)
My grandpa was a hotel owner in Ježník ('Mösnig'), in the neighborhood of Krnov.

Wish you continued happy DXing - it seems to be typical for us 'Silesians' ;-)

Here's my audio of 1530

the female mentions "Bucharest" at 19 seconds and and the male announcer says "Radio romanian actualitati" at about 39 seconds

Yes...Vesti FM 1413 is a regular TA on the East Coast and by the DXers in BC. Romania 1179 to some extent.

Quita a bit different from my experiences in the UK and northwest Europe. There at night, the MW band had a large number of stations from Spain. Fortunately, the hotel where I usually stayed in London wasn't all that bad, so I was able to DX.

My daughter spent a couple of months in Prague teaching. She loved it. As well as weekend day trips and overnight trips to nearby owns and cities, The fact that she's part Czech from her mom's side added to her enjoyment. Eventually, the place where she was teaching offered heer a fulltime gig. She seriously considered it, but opted to go back to London and her boyfriend (now husband),

At night the conditions are little bit different, but in that part of Europe Romania still dominates, followed by Spain and many Middle Eastern stations. Every other country has slowly abandoned the Medium Wave broadcasts.

Prague is a very nice city and well worth visiting as a tourist. I highly recommend it. And of course the fine Czech beer can't be beat.

There are some Italian private broadcasters on AM (RAI no longer active):
Übersicht: Italienische Privatradios auf Mittelwelle
and from 1600 - 1650 many low power Dutch pirate Stn's. You must be lucky to catch one of them in the U.S. ;-)
Na zdraví!
During my visit near Florence seven years ago, only two MW stations tripped the scan button in my rental Toyota. 666 and 1170. I seem to recall that 666 was RAI from Pisa (about 55 miles west of where I was). I forget what 1170 was. At night, the band came alive with stuff from all over Europe,North Africa, and the Middle East.

The FM band was chock full. Including unlicensed and split frequency stationS. David Eduardo referred to Italy as''''the Wild West" of European radio, and added that the Italian Government had more or less given up on trying to regulate all the unlicensed stations (barring complaints from the public), The only rule was that RAI had exclusive rights to 100-102 Mhz. (or thereabouts.0

There is a station called 'Radio Capodistria', that can also be heard on 1170 AM here in Germany. They are located in Koper (Slovenia, Adriatic Sea, abt. 130 km East of Venice) near the Italian border to Triest. Hence, a large part of their programmes are transmitted in Italian language.

That may eplain the 1170 that I was hearing. aalthough I was hearing it in the daytime. Definitely weaker than the 666 from Pisa.
