CBC Music (Radio 2)

A few years ago there had been talk that CBC Radio 2 was in its last days due to a financial situation. Is CBC still considering selling or shutting down the Radio 2 operations?

There was talk of CBC shutting down Radio 2 as part of a cost cutting strategy when Stephen Harper and the Conservatives gutted the broadcaster’s funding. The final outcome was that CBC cut corners in other areas, and Radio 2 remained on the air (albeit with commercial breaks). When Trudeau and the Liberals came to power in late 2015, they restored CBC funding. However, O’Toole (Conservative leader) has promised to defund the CBC to level the playing field and create fair competition for other broadcasters.

So if the conservatives take control in the future, CBC Music (Radio 2) still could be in trouble?

The entire CBC would be in trouble, but CBC Music (Radio 2) would probably be the first casualty due to their low ratings in almost every market. CBC Radio One gets high ratings in most markets so it usually safe from the rounds of budget cuts (for now).

If Radio 2 gets shut down, there would be almost no over-the-air outlets for classical and AAA in most of the country.

The frequencies that CBC Music are on across Canada would be filled pretty fast, I would guess. I’m sure the one in Windsor Ontario at 89.9 would be a perfect frequency for a commercial station in Windsor, at some point the possibility of some existing Windsor station could move to that frequency for better coverage.

In the U.S., where NPR News/Talk, Classical and AAA stations have lost federal funding, they've made it up with on-air fundraisers and donations, even if the license is still held by a state organization or university.

I'm not sure why CBC Music / SRC Ici Musique couldn't appeal to listeners for funding. And the CBC / SRC main radio networks have very good ratings and could either go with some limited commercials or similar on-air fundraising like NPR stations do in the U.S. No need to sell the stations.
