WJKA (CBS) wouldn't sign on until that September, so Wilmington only had its own ABC and NBC. It switched to FOX in 1994, as part of the "Big Switch".

Burgaw is now served by Time Warner Cable (soon to be Charter). Here's their current lineup:

ACSN and BET sharing a channel! Up here, it was ACSN and Nickelodeon that did the sharing. Appalachian Community Service Network was full of instructional programming directed at school-age children, ostensibly to enhance education in poverty-stricken areas of the Appalachians. I have no idea how it wound up on systems nationwide in the early days of cable -- guess it was a case of satellite space being cheap and cable systems needing programming. I think it eventually became The Learning Channel, which, of course, is now the trash/reality channel TLC.
