PREMISE.... Aircraft with a "V" dorsal antenna, flying at 1,000 feet, xmitting a 50 watt signal on 3 MHz, during the first two hours after local sunrise, in July and over water.....

QUESTION.... at what DISTANCE would you normally expect the signal to come in 5 by 5 during that 2 hour period?

In case you've not already guessed, this question pertains to the last flight of Amelia Earhart. In books/Internet articles the opinions widely vary. I'm curious as to what YOUR expertise suggests.
