That's correct. In fact, at this point, you will save yurself a lot of grief if you do not seek 501 status with the IRS, unles you have some other worthwhile purpose for the group. Once you get on the IRS "Christmas Card" List, it is hard to get off.

You are doing the right thing, getting your ducks in a row so you can wait for a filing window. Good luck!
