'A Beautiful Mind' Mathematician John Nash, Wife Dead in Car Accident

Famed economist and mathematician John Nash, whose career was portrayed in the Oscar-winning film A Beautiful Mind, and his wife Alicia Nash died in car accident on the New Jersey turnpike Saturday (5/23).

Per NewJersey.com, the Nashes’ taxi driver lost control while trying to pass another car, crashing into the center rail and ejecting the Nashes. Nash was 86; Alicia 82.

Nash won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 for his work on complex game theory, which had implications in everything from mathematics to biology. He also struggled with paranoid schizophrenia, with Alicia largely serving as his caretaker. He was a professor at Princeton at the time of his death.

One of the most brilliant minds of the century and yet not enough common sense to buckle up. Both he and his wife were ejected from the taxi. They would have both likely survived had they remained inside as did the taxi driver.
