What the hell happened to KKNG's ratings and ranking? I have my theories, however, I'd like to see what others have to say first. :)

Could it be because they strayed just slightly outside the norm and away from a strict classic country format? My experience indicates that moving away from the norm generally isn't received well in market number #53. Please share your opinions.

I feel they have strayed away from servicing their faithful audiences needs. When they lost their identity, they became nothing but a lesser version of the other two CC-owned country stations. In the end, messing with the core audience to accomidate poor salesmanship will NOT prove to be a wise decision. At this point the only thing they can really do is damage control. There is another station in town that might consider what is happening to KKNG when making adjustments to their music. Sales problems are just that. Get sales people that can sell the product, don't change the product to make it "easier to sell". When sales gets in the programming business, there WILL be failure.

I think the problem is the music. Too short of a playlist and not enough traditional country music. My guess is that they don't have a PD that really knows country music. It's my opinion that a song that was on the charts last month is not "legendary" country music. There's too much repetition of the music. I've heard the same classic song four times in an 8-hour period.

I've switched to WSM 650 in Nashville on the internet (wsmonline.com).

Re: 93.3 KKNG-Country With An Edge? NO!

Hey it's easy to be a easy chair quarterback when it comes to radio so I thought I would throw my two cents in since I do listen to some radio here in Oklahoma City including KKNG.
Kings real problem is, they should have never adopted the phrase "Classic Country With An Edge" then start playing songs I never heard of. BIG BIG MISTAKE!
When I first heard that I knew that somebody with limited experience sold someone a bill of goods on going after KXXY & Twister. The result is what you see now.
KING COUNTRY was great on it's own and if they would have simply left it alone (hence the phrase "if it's not broken don't fix it) they would have been just fine.
After having lived here most of my life, the biggest mistake Oklahoma City broadcasters have made are the knee jerk decisions. Almost everytime those decisions have proven negative results. Furthermore, people will listen to your radio station if your what you say you are, you play the core music people want to hear (BIG PLAYLIST HINT HINT)And you are there with the same format
everytime they tune in. Consistancy wins in this market because Oklahomans don't necessarly like change.
If you are true to them, they will be true to you.

Just like you won't find pizza at Braums, you shouldn't hear anything outside classic country music on King Country.

Just my 2 cents. :)
Edited by Summers on 11/09/05 10:19 PM.

WSM....truly one of the great radio stations in the country. Their DJ's are virtual country music historians.

God forbid anyone try anything just left of center. I'm from Oklahoma but really the rule is the status quo and the norm. Otherwise people get confused and befuddled. I'm talking about my own people but this is not a prgoressive market. Change is not embraced. Oh well.

Perhaps Tyler could make 97.3 the home for the "edge" part of KKNG's playlist, or an americana/aaa type station similiar to KFAN, KGSR or WRLT.

Actually Braums is selling a line of frozen pizzas under their name now...
