The Price Is Right prime time special (8 PM, ch. 34) was the final show of the six-episode run.

Am I the only person who finds it weird that not one “Big 3” Miami station stayed on 24/7 at this time?

I know South Florida was smaller population-wise in ‘86, but for a market it’s size during that time, it’s unusual to have not had one station running Headline News or the overnight network newscast. Heck, channel 12 up the road beat them to the punch it appears!

This kept going (I think) until the affiliate switch in ‘89. WSVN and WTVJ became mostly 24 hour stations (I think WTVJ still signed off late-nights on weekends).. WPLG was still regularly signing off into the early 90’s at around 3am.

When I last lived there in 2011, the lone sign-off holdout was WFOR, Who always programmed “Weather/Radar” during the 4-5am hour on Saturday and Sunday AM. Radar loop with NOAA weather radio in the background. They had started this at WCIX for some reason in the late 80’s-early 90’s I do believe.

Remember that in Miami, even back in '86, there were "The Big Two" and then the "next four".

Univision and Telemundo captured the biggest shares for news, prime and even daytime. Then we got the traditional network affiliates and the rest of them.

4 looked to be signing off 2:30-3am
7 signed off from 2-5am
10 signed off at 3am.
23 signed off around 2 after the late movie (still better than most SIN affiliates at the time which would sign off around midnight)

I think channel 6 was mostly all-night at this time, being the predominant independent station. I do know they would sign off at least once a week for maintenance.

Bring up a good point. By then, Spanish had become the predominant language in Dade. You didn’t really see a lot of Spanish speaking folks moving north to Broward or North Dade until after Andrew.

What’s odd is WSCV is nowhere to be seen in these listings. By then they were on with 100% Spanish programming. They must have been a distant second to WLTV or someone never bothered to contact them about getting their TV listings!

Not exactly true. Back in the early 80's we used to joke about Jose Martinez who moved to Broward and called himself Joe Martin. In fact, one of my biggest concerns when managing WHTT (Y-100's sister station) was that the signal did not cover the growing Broward Hispanic population, which I why I voted in '81 against consolidating Dade and Broward, and David Ross down the hall voted to join the two markets!

Channel 51 became really aggressive around 1983 when Julio Rumbaut (formerly of WQBA and WSUA) came on as manager and "founder" of the new programming. It quickly jumped to second place in prime and in the news blocks, of course.
