I'm surprised that FOX and NBC would flip like that in a market like Kansas City. NBC still had the AFC rights for NFL Football in 1994, so that means most Kansas City Chiefs games were on NBC. Switching to Fox means you lose the Chiefs games but get the NFC, was that really a big difference in ratings? I don't think Fox had an advantage in prime time ratings, NBC was about to start a 5 year stretch of Seinfeld and ER alternating being the top-rated show of the year.

WDAF was sold to New World Communications, who had 20% equity in FOX and per the agreement most stations owned at the time (or was in the process of being bought) switched to FOX once the existing contract was up. Basically New World wanted FOX on a VHF station (with a couple exceptions)

I knew about the Fox-New World merger, & that other TV stations were also involved. I also knew that WDAF-TV was the only station involved in the merger that was an NBC affilate that actually switched to Fox (Former sister stations WVTM-TV Ch. 13 in Birmingham, AL & KNSD-TV Ch. 39 were sold to NBC, with WVTM-TV later being sold to Media General & later to Hearst, ironically making it a sister station to WDAF-TV's rival KMBC-TV Ch. 9), as well that the Kansas City Chiefs are an AFC team. One thing that I remember was that WDAF-TV did air some Chiefs preseason games locally in the late 90's. They also continue to air the occasional Chiefs games that Fox carries.

Wheel of Fortune is now on WDAF in Kansas City, but WIBW still carries it in Topeka to this day.
Going a little bit off-topic, but the first TV station in the Kansas City, MO-KS area to air the nighttime version of Wheel of Fortune was ABC affilate KMBC-TV Ch. 9. KMBC-TV aired the show from 1983 to 1988. After that the show was aired on CBS affilate KCTV-TV Ch. 5 from 1988 to 2003. It then moved to NBC affilate KSHB-TV Ch. 41 in 2003 & they aired it until 2012 at which time the show moved to Fox affilate WDAF-TV Ch. 4.
1984 promo for Wheel of Fortune on KMBC-TV Ch. 9.

Here are some additional listings from the Kansas City Star, including what KYFC-TV was showing on this day, along with some corrections. The Kansas City Star only included primetime listings for the Topeka, KS TV stations in its Sunday Star TV listings.
