New PD at WKTU

Great

KTU maybe change format soon???

No. KTU is a highly rated and high billing station. It is very Top 10 in 25-54 and in billings. No way it changes or shifts format.

True, David, BUT....after the events of 6/3/05, I don't rule ANYTHING out when it comes to NY radio....

Actually, the June 3rd flip to Jack was well warranted and, actually, very successful. CBS-FM had become really, really old. Agencies were not buying any longer. It was not top 10 in 25-54 and was not top 15 in 18-49. Jack rapidly produced better 25-54 numbers than the oldies format had done at the end.

The only reason CBS-FM dropped Jack and created a new non-oldies classic hits station was because their research people saw what WOGL in Philadelphia was doing in the first two years of PPM testing; as CBS adjusted the format, it got better and better in the PPM trial data (which was not available publicly and only available to a few of us under NDA). So CBS decided that the 2008 coming to NY of PPM would be best served with a new classic hits station... and they were motivated by the fear that someone else would take a format that did so well in the PPM.

It becomes harder and harder for companies to justify single station PDs who don't either have an air shift or some other supplemental duty.

Even with that, there was obviously enough brand equity in "CBS-FM" to bring the moniker and some of the personalities back.

The flip to Jack was the worst format change in American radio history. It was reflected in the backlash by WCBS-FM listeners. I understand the demographic issues, but they should have kept the personalities and gradually phased out older music. That snarky voice was an insult to all their listeners.

but it also proved that ANYTHING can happen in NY radio....who woulda thunk that one?

Who would have thunk it? Just about anyone that wasn't emotionally attached to an under-performing radio format. It's like saying that nobody could foresee the demise of standards or beautiful music. It was inevitable due to the lack of advertiser interest.

No different than the end of Top 40 on WABC or MOR on WNEW or standards on WQEW or the flip to talk of WMCA. There are plenty of "heritage" formats that have lasted past their expiration date and changed...
