No deal like that is ever "on the public market".

So today there have been more public posts about Taylor Swift. The first came from the CEO of Big Machine:

The second came from Justin Bieber, who is managed by Scooter Braun:

    So obviously it's complicated.

Taylor swift still should have been given the oppurtunity to purchase her music cataloug and should have been given the first opportunity to do so.

According to her former label president, she was given that opportunity, and she walked away. He presents the evidence here:

    She has not responded.

What is UMG's response given that they hold the distribution rights contract to Big Machine Records. And shouldn't UMG have the final say on how the contract between Big Machine and Swift's contract was handled.

UMG has no role in this at all. They merely handle distribution (under contract), and have no ownership in any content. Big Machine is legally independent from any major label, including UMG.

However UMG's Republic Records is Taylor's new label. Still, they have no ownership of her music prior to her contract with them. There were rumors that UMG was going to buy Big Machine, but obviously that didn't happen.

Also the leaders Big Machine that released the statement mentioned that one of Taylor Swift's family members was an investor of Big Machine at the time Swift was under contract with that label.

All of her music masters are now owned by someone she says "bullied" her, and she has lost the opportunity to buy her masters back.

    Here is more

Given a worldwide audience via her exclusive concert for Amazon Prime members to celebrate “Prime Day,” Taylor Swift took the opportunity for some payback on recent career developments.

Swift recently admitted she was “grossed out” when she learned that manager Scooter Braun had purchased her former label, Big Machine. That meant he controlled her master recordings on her early works. Swift felt she was “bullied” by Braun, something the manager has vehemently denied. The back and forth on the issue has consumed the music and entertainment press over the last few weeks.

Tonight, Swift took the opportunity to underline her grievances. Although there were no overt disses, fans thought there was no mistaking who she meant when she warned with a shout about getting down with the “liars and dirty, dirty cheats of the world” in her preamble to “Shake It Off.”
