BOARDMAN, Ohio -
A Boardman man has pleaded "not guilty" to a charge of child endangering after police say he left his infant daughter alone in a running, unlocked car while he was inside a drug store.

WKBN-TV morning news anchor, 36-year-old Dan Martin entered a written plea in the case according to online court records.

Boardman Township police were called to the parking lot of the Market Street CVS shortly before 6:30 pm Monday when a woman heard the sound of a baby crying coming from an SUV parked outside the store.

The woman told police that she saw an unattended infant in a car seat inside the SUV.

She said the car's engine was running and the doors were not locked.

The woman told officers that after about ten minutes a man came out of the store and told her it was his baby. By then a police cruiser had arrived.

The store manager told police that when she became aware of the unattended infant, she searched the store until she found Martin in the back of the store. She said that when Martin was told that police were on their way, he left his shopping cart in the store and returned to the car.

I'd imagine the extremely negative implications of a conviction for "child endangerment" are behind his plea of not guilty. But if that's how the law reads, and the baby was in his unlocked, running car for at least 10 minutes, that's what he's likely to be convicted of and punished for. The sentence may be brief or even suspended, and his fine may be manageable, but "child endangerment," sadly, will follow him around until the end of his days, even though no harm at all came to the child involved in this incident.
 
Doors not locked? That is incredibly stupid.

I know a guy who had loaded his Christmas gifts into the car to take to his in-laws and was about to put his
infant son in the car when somebody hopped into the unlocked, running car and sped off. Lost all of his gifts
and nearly had a kidnapping on his hands. Could have been the case here too.

It appears rival WFMJ could not wait to pounce on this story. One of the more disquieting aspects of the TV business.

We had a similar incident here around a year ago when a KDKA reporter left his dog in the car while he
ran into a store for something. A passerby actually broke the car window and took the dog out.
