Lucho Gatica has passed, 90 years old

A wonderful singer that accompanied famous Tango composers died a few days ago, according to Billboard Magazine. He was 90. He sings "Percal" to perfection (an Argentine tango) with the orchestra from Miguel Calo, recorded in 1965. GREAT music!

Lucho Gatica was from Chile, I believe.

Lucho was indeed from Chile, and he was principally a singer of boleros. He was known as "El Rey del Bolero"

I was unaware that he recorded tangos, as his hits and his fame were based on singing boleros.

He had recorded relatively recently with Mexican romantic singer Luis Miguel.

Yeah, listen to this, "Percal". I read that Lucho's voiceover here is in 1965, but the actual tango orchestrated by Miguel Calo was done even earlier, but I'm not 100% on that. There are different versions out there of the same song by Calo.

Here's the version of "Percal" that I have from an old LP my aunt gave me about 20 years ago in Lima, Peru, which I still own.

By the way, are there any radio stations in South America / Argentina, that play tangos today? I prefer the older ones like "Percal", "El Choclo" and "Caminito". It's an interesting genre of music that I've actually enjoyed since I was a kid, as my dad recorded various albums on reel to reel tape in the early 70's, which I still have and amazingly, play to this day.

There is a Bs. As. municipal government (CABA) operated FM, La 2x4 at http://www.buenosaires.gob.ar/la2x4 It streams, and it is known as the only all-tango station in the world.

The station shows in the ratings, around 12th to 15th and the audience is almost all over 50.

When I first visited Buenos Aires, in the 60's, all the taxi drivers listened to tango shows on AM. When I worked there in the late 90's and early 2000's, they all listened to "rock nacional" on FM. Now, there is a new generation and they listen to reggaetón while the old drivers listen to Mitre AM or Radio 10 AM for talk shows.
