106.1 The Breeze

"Stand By Me" and "Unchained Melody" sound timeless, not like '50s or '60s period pieces. Either fits fine with the Legend song to my ears, just as they would with Adele's slower hits, like "Hello" and "Someone Like You." A trainwreck would be going from "In the Still of the Night" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale" into Legend or Adele. Those songs practically scream "'50s" and ''60s," respectively. You'd have a really hard time finding consensus positives on both songs in a testing environment from anyone other than outliers with extremely broad tastes. So far, I think they are cherry-picking the older songs in the playlist extremely skillfully.

WOGL plays Journey followed by The Four Tops and I've never heard anyone comment how odd that is but to me the two groups are worlds apart.

Not sure why it matters. If both songs test well with the target, I don't see what the problem is. There's going to be some imaging between the songs since the tempo and genres are clearly different...so I doubt anyone would even notice. In fact, average listeners don't notice this stuff.

Has anyone seen any advertising for The Breeze yet? Any billboards? TV spots? Bus ads? (Ironically, I still see some Real 106.1 bus ads out there).

Just curious if iHeart is doing ANY advertising that this new station exists

I see Real 106 ads darned near daily on the busses passing by. And I get that—it takes time to work through swapping out ads. It’s just funny.

I haven’t seen anything for the Breeze. Admittedly, it could be on digital billboards and I’m not seeing them when it rotates through. I did however see a B101 Christmas music commercial. Of course, I also heard them play a More FM holiday jingle on air. Oops. Missed yanking that one out of the system.

I kinda miss the More FM jingles. The new B101 jingles (maybe I should say "jingle" because it feels like I keep hearing the same one over and over again) just don't sit well with me. It sounds...stunted or something. I keep expecting there to be more to it. I mean, it doesn't matter because normal people don't even hear jingles but the More FM jingles used to get stuck in my head. These B101 jingles definitely won't.

Same. I never cared either way about the name itself, but the jingles were solid to my ear. So far, there’s something about the way “Philly’s” feels jammed into the jingle I hear...it just grated on me. Not that they have any reason to care about my idiosyncratic thoughts about jingles.

I think it's the "Philly's" part that bothers me too. The thing has no flow to it. And why did they think they needed to jam "Philly's" in there at all? Like we don't know where we are?

I got the adding of “Today’s” to the spoken references to More FM. Like it, dislike it...whatever, it was just “said,” and not part of the jingles—at least I don’t recall the jingles adding it. So I’d kind of go with the same thing here and not be bothered—just say it with the name if you think it adds value. Or find a package where you can have a sing or two of it in the rotation but without sounding like “Philly’s B” all occupies one syllable.

I think (going from not so great memory any more) that the old B jingles mostly didn’t tack on the “point one.” If I’m not imagining that, you’ve now added even more to what sounds like the same number of notes.

To me, and just a random opinion, this is another way the reintroduction of the name felt rushed.

Announcers on The Breeze... have we established they are really live and in Philadelphia or not? Have they read a weather forecast or commented on who the Eagles are playing this weekend? Or do they just hope we're having a great day and remind us that our workday is easier with The Breeze? Which would indicated they are voice tracking from another market.

I thought I heard one DJ step on a vocal the other day, which would likely only happen if he is live. And should DJs on a Soft AC talk over the song intros? Soft AC stations in the past never talked over the music. But if they don't talk over song intros, will younger listeners think the station is aimed too old?

And what is the dividing line for artists who get on the playlist and artists who are deemed too wimpy. Neil Diamond and Air Supply make the list, Barry Manilow and Barbra Streisand don't? Certainly Anne Murray is not included but Christopher Cross is. Are The Doobie Brothers, Little River Band, Carole King, Diana Ross, Linda Ronstadt, Paul Simon, Carly Simon, Seals & Crofts, Steve Miller, Cat Stevens, Steely Dan and America too old? Are Sheena Easton, Andy Gibb, Al Jarreau, Sarah McLachlin, Vanessa Williams and Wilson Phillips cool enough? Do John Lennon and Paul McCartney make the cut but George Harrison and Ringo Starr solo hits do not? I'd love to know how they test for who's a turnoff to younger listeners and who isn't.

Someone in another thread made a comment about "us doing their" job regarding programming 106.1. And it made me think, 'Well, yeah. It's pretty bad. What would I have started with?" So here ya go. LOL.

Some songs in there I think may be too upbeat in a sonic way for the Breeze (Hazy Shade of Winter, Nu Shooz).

And I feel like there's some 80s cheese that's overlooked that would fit in sound-wise... but doubt they'd test into the playlist... stuff like

Breathe- "Hands to Heaven"
Breathe- "How Can I Fall"
Bonnie Raitt- "I Can't Make You Love Me"
Marc Cohen- "Walkin' In Memphis"

Just to name a few

The last three, definitely. All were staples of mainstream AC for years. I'm surprised they aren't part of The Breeze. They were to their era of AC what songs like "I Go Crazy" and "Baby Come Back" were to the previous lite rock years.

Oh, and the Cohn (not Cohen) and Raitt hits are '90s cheese -- both are from 1991.

I wasn't thinking of the Breeze or Soft AC "template" when I made my list. I included certain songs and deleted others based on conditions in this specific market. I don't think sleepy is gonna work here. Just play songs that the target likes. Note I kick off with NO SEVENTIES. Not sure I'd ever add it actually.

Announcers on The Breeze... have we established they are really live and in Philadelphia or not? Have they read a weather forecast or commented on who the Eagles are playing this weekend?

They may live in Philly, but that doesn't mean they're sitting there live in the control room. Here's Dan Blackman's bio:

Don't miss Dan through your 9 to 5 workday on The Breeze. You may remember Dan for his 18 year run on B101/Philadelphia. More recently, he’s been heard on our sister station, “Lite FM” in New York. When he’s not on the air, Dan enjoys movies, all the Philadelphia sports teams and the Jersey Shore. He is a proud father of his 18-year-old daughter, Abby, and finds time to teach business and coach basketball in the Cherry Hill area. Dan is so happy to be back on the air in Philly, playing “Philly’s Relaxing Favorites” on 106.1 The Breeze.

That may be YOUR list, but it's definitely not theirs. They're playing about 20% 70s.
