    BBQ at Transmitter

Understand 94.1 transmitter is BBQing this morning KIRO-TV had coverage of "radio tower on fire" and the video shows smoke coming from the TOP of the tower.

Looked like about 1/2 up the antenna to me.

I didn't see anything more than the TV story, but if it's the "Master Antenna" we hear about from time to time and, if the amount of smoke is any indication, this might keep tower climbers and insurance companies busy for a while.

Unfortunately, there are a number of things that could add up to what the distant video showed so, unless we hear from someone that works at that site, it'll all be interesting, but useless speculation.

Oh wow, didn't hear anything about this. Either there wasn't too much damage and they were able to get back on fairly quickly or they're running from a backup, as all sounded normal about a half hour or so ago. Has anyone checked 96.5, 102.5, or 106.1? I think they're all on that tower.

No, but you're welcome to check them and give us a full report.

Apparently the master antenna for the West Tiger FM's burned up this morning. Those stations have switched to their backups on Cougar Mt.

Yeah, the local SBE chapter reports to Barry Mishkind:

"11/8/18 - Stations at Seattle's Tiger Mountain site were sending smoke signals, after a fire caused major damage to the master antenna. SBE16 reports six stations moved to auxiliary sites to stay on the air."

Maybe "Hot" got TOO hot....JK, they are on the other Tiger location. Guess this is one way to slow that juggernaut that is The Sound!

KSWD was using an old analog mode. It's the oldest form long distance communication. And it work! people noticed and they even got there name mentioned on TV.

Can confirm at least KING-FM was/is on Cougar. Nobody from over there had surveyed the damage to Tiger as of early this afternoon.

Chances are, the Cougar backups will be running for a couple weeks at least!
As we used to say down in ol' Mexico City...A.M.F.!

Probably longer than that. If the damage was extensive enough to create that much smoke, there are a lot of custom made antenna parts that are toast. That and their fancy, expensive, custom-made antenna protection system clearly didn't work. They will want a working protection system before putting power to it again.

If the weather turns on WTM, it will be tough to find a tower crew willing to work up there. That antenna could be off line until Spring.
