Los Angeles Kings to have their games on the Iheart app

In 1982-1983 no Los Angeles radio station wanted to carry Big Bob Miller and the Los Angeles Kings. KCSN, the mighty 3000 watt signal out of Cal State Northridge just wouldn't allow this to happen!

No amount of spin can come up with enough lipstick for this turkey. This is a sad day for the Kings and even sadder day for local radio, which continues its downward spiral to complete irrelevancy.
In my experience, hockey has never benefited most US stations that carried it. Indeed, in most cases the team leased time to a station to force the games on the air.
All that has happened here is that no station with a decent signal wants those audience killer games in LA... even the lower rated KABC. How many hockey fans are there in LA that would listen to the games on the radio? The average attendance at a home game is 18,000 compared to nearly triple that for a Dodgers game. It's a limited interest sport in SoCal.
This is simply a case of a team that is so minimally of interest in a market where 70% of the population is ethnic or first generation immigrant that they can't even find a half-decent signal to buy time on!
On the other hand, this is a big win for iHeart, which is making a major effort to be the dominant broadcaster in the new media space. Add in the purchase last week of a leading podcast company and you have a corporation that is focusing on content independently of platforms... the future of radio.
As is almost always the case, David, your logic and analysis are impeccable, but I must agree with ChannelFlipper that this, indeed, is a sad day for broadcast radio.
I hope this trend doesn't become commonplace. Admittedly, there probably isn't a lot of difference between being on a throwaway AM with poor coverage over the area and being online, but it makes radio less relevant. Considering one must be paying for a internet connection to now access LA Kings audio or have a cable subscription to watch their games, this makes the content far less accessible to many. KABC had a decent signal in the area, but AM 1150 was a weak one. A shame a true broadcast deal couldn't be struck.

So the Kings walk away from the rights fee they received from KABC, and that's bad for radio? I'm not sure I understand the logic. The Kings assume all costs associated with this, and likely are paying iHeart for access to their platform, and that's bad for radio? The NHL is lucky it still has a TV deal with NBC.
