    Odds and Ends

For the curious who have noticed that channel 9 is approaching the end of the alphabet (K09ZX-D was assigned in Camp Verde) and have wondered how the FCC will assign call signs after reaching ZZ, the answer is 6-character base call signs. Channels 7 and 13 have already gone beyond ZZ, and K13AAD-D was assigned to a station in Kane County, Utah, in June. Utah has seen eight of the new call signs for channel 13, with one each in Alaska and Oregon. Utah also has the first three new call signs for channel 7.

As always, lot of interesting information Dave. Out of curiosity,
it just occurred to me that South East Arizona is not represented.
I assume there are translators that bring Tucson television to
the smaller communities in that area.....

Surprisingly, no. Tucson's market is much smaller than Phoenix's, in area as well as population, so the main stations serve most populated areas of Pima County, and translators fill in the NW valley shielded from Mt Bigelow. The only outlying stations that rebroadcast Tucson TV are K20GG-D, a KUAT translator serving Safford and southern Greenlee County, and K20FO, soon to be K28OY-D, a KVOA translator serving Sierra Vista. I suppose that KFTU, a full-power Unimás station serving Sierra Vista and Douglas, is really a Tucson translator as well. Douglas, a city of 17,000+ as of 2010, has no English-language OTA TV. Its only OTA are the aforementioned KFTU and two Agua Prieta stations. The only stations serving Sierra Vista (pop. 44,000) are K20FO, KWBA (Tucson's CW station that is actually licensed to Sierra Vista) and KFTU. Nogales, population 20,000, only has the five Mexican stations from across the border since KMSB got its transmitter location switched from the Santa Rita Mountains to Mt. Bigelow.

The White Mountains used to be dotted with Tucson translators, in Show Low/Pinetop, Greer, Round Valley (Eager/Springerville), Nutrioso and Alpine, but those were all shut down 15-20 years ago.

    Activity from over the weekend:

    Programming Changes

    • XHFA 1.x (15) Nogales SON (TV Axteca) has added a second programming stream to its signal. ADN 40 is now on channel 1.2, joining Azteca Uno (formerly Aztec Trece), which remains on channel 1.1.

Construction Permits and Special Temporary Authority Requested

    • K03ID-D Flagstaff (One Minstries Inc.) has requested to move its transmitter location from Mormon Mountain to Mingus Mountan, providing it a chance to serve a larger population, and allegedly, giving it a better chance to survive financially.

A correction and some additional information I forgot to post:

ADN40 was authorized for XHFA on October 4, 2017. As with all multiplexed TV Azteca stations, the main sub is allotted 15 Mbps and the secondary channel 3 Mbps.

It's been awhile since I had a chance to take a reading there, and even this time, I only got it from their "complementario" station in Cananea. Confirming what you say, the main sub gets 15.65 Mbps and the secondary gets 3.61 Mbps. Both are in 16:9 aspect ratio, but Azteca Uno is 1080i, while ADN40 is 480i.

In other news, I have yet more updates I'd missed:

Construction Permits and Special Temporary Authority Requested

    • K30MM-D Gila River Indian Community (Gila River Telecommunications Inc.) has requested a modification of its construction permit to specify a new transmitter location. The request is in conjunction with the request to sell the permit to Globe LPTV for their use after have been displaced from the 600 MHz band. Technical specifications: Ch 30; TL 33° 19' 57" N, 112° 4' 0" W (South Mtn.); ERP 15 kW directional (2.5° electrical beam tilt); HAAT 498 m.

    Expired, Expiring, Canceled or Deleted

    • Gila River Telecommunications has requested dismissal of its lone remaining ungranted application for a new television station on channel 21, to have broadcast from the Stotonic stie. The FCC has dismissed the application.

I'm assuming cable came quite early to Sierra Vista and Douglas. The Phoenix stations have translators all over NW Arizona
