Entravision turns around 107.3 battle

Entravision has lost out in its bid to stop a radio station in northwestern Maricopa County from going forward.

It wanted to halt the operation of KAZV in Aguila, a 50,000-watt station on 107.3 transmitting halfway between Aguila and Wickenburg.

KAZV had put on air a temporary facility in order to satisfy its CP as well as local zoning requirements with the county — not just to get on air with days to go. If Entravision could get it out of the way, it sought to move KVVA to South Mountain (and the COL to Sun Lakes) and change KDVA to 106.7.

KAZV, which now has Program Test Authority in hand, is owned by Matinee Media Corporation out of Rio Grande City, Texas.

They're going to need the height they intended to build if they're going to have a shot at covering people and not rattlesnakes, but they've lived to fight another day.

Reading all the crap they had to go through just to get this far underscores how difficult it is to turn one of these auction licenses into a radio station.

Just what the Valley needs...another rimshot. At least it isn't another translator!

In other news, Will Kemp's construction permit to upgrade his Payson FM with his namesake calls expires in a week and a half. I take it they're still running their Class C3 power.

And the drama continues. KAZV has filed for an STA, citing the lack of a generator at its tower site and a death in the family of the engineer, to quote the application, "MATINEE DOES ANTICIPATE GETTING THE STATION BACK ON THE AIR SHORTLY, AND REQUESTS SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO BE SILENT IN THE INTERIM."

We'll see if they'll get on the air soon. Bill Smith's TV station outside of Pensacola, Florida claims to be on the air, but I was unable to receive it when I was there.

If the rimshot ends up covering the retirement communities of the northwest Valley like KSWG does, he could put MeTV Radio on there. All he would need is a satellite Internet connection at the transmitter.

As a result of a letter from Entravision's counsel dated last week, the FCC has dismissed this STA as of today, and to put an end to it all, it also canceled the license and deleted the call letters. Entravision argued that KAZV had not operated in a year—and that Maricopa County officials informed the company that the KAZV facility was abandoned. The equipment was removed in June, as evidenced by photos included in the filing.

Does this essentially clear the way for KVVA to get up to South Mountain? If so that's a coup for Entravision and makes that stick considerably more valuable I would think.

Yes. The plan that Entravision had originally had would move KVVA to South Mountain and KDVA to 106.7 MHz. The COL for KVVA would become Sun Lakes, not like there'd be that many people in Sun Lakes listening to this station.

The thing about moving KVVA to the mountain is that it allows KDVA to break its simulcast and become another service, or be sold. That said, it still would primarily be covering the Southwest Valley. (It would also bump K294CW.)

So there's also this letter in which Matinee itself surrendered the license.

It explains that the landowner of the property Matinee had set up on and was negotiating to buy forced them to buy more land, terms they would not agree to, and the legal battle had drained their funds and left them unable to meet the landowner's new terms:

"Due to the significant and unanticipated additional legal and other costs Matinee incurred during the local zoning and permitting process. and including responding to the oppositions and strike petitions filed by Entravision with Maricopa County and the Commission, Matinee does not have sufficient funds to purchase the transmitter site land on the landowner's new terms."

Entravision today filed updated versions of its December 2017 applications to relocate KVVA to South Mountain and KDVA to 106.7, which as last time would require KPPV to slide up to 106.9.

Those verbal agreements for land are only as good as the paper they're written on! Moving KVVA to So Mtn makes far more sense than new service to the non-booming census designated place of Aguila, Az.

Aguila is even smaller than Salome, a farther piece down the road.

It's amazing that a license would be granted in a place where there is no useful commerce or population. One has to think that the endgame was to move this nearer to a larger town.

Truer words have rarely been spoken, Doctor.

That rancher probably did them a favor because operating the station would have drained their capital rather quickly. Scorpions, snakes, gila monsters and other desert denizens don't listen to radio.

"You're gorgeous, you're beautiful, you're on Stereo 99...Phoenix's B-B-C!"

Yes indeedy...let's petition KMVP to run Pillow Talk with Ray Vargas at night. Sure beats a rehash of everything that was run into the ground earlier in the day!

I find the metallic sounding voices on KMVP's ESPN feed not a great listening experience, even compared to the Sirius XM feed or the stream. And they could have fixed it in the four years it's been happening.

Perhaps they do on a much lower and ancient modulated frequency....

Been readin' too much of Nurse Jeff's ramblings, I suppose. I'll close the gate as I leave.

Don't mean to jinx things, but shouldn't the title of this thread be changed? The Media Hut oijua board is spelling out a yes for Entravision.

...or was that in response to Nurse Jeff asking for a raise?
