Local Radio Networks Shifts to Skyview Networks

This deal takes into effect on January 1st, 2019.

Local Radio Networks (LRN) is collaborating with Skyview Networks and ABC Radio. As part of the deal, Skyview Networks will provide its satellite distribution platform and become the network sales partner for LRN's 24/7 music formats including AC, Country, CHR and Rock along with localization, major market talent, large libraries and uncompressed audio. ABC Radio will provide resources for additional programming opportunities. The agreement begins January 1, 2019.

"Steve Jones and ABC Radio bring some very special content opportunities to the table, as well."

This new relationship between LRN and ABC basically recreates the old ABC Radio Networks that existed before the sale to Citadel 12 years ago. In those days, ABC owned a group of satellite-delivered music formats for local stations (purchased from the Satellite Music Networks based in Dallas), in addition to its news network. The main difference is the responsibility for distribution is with Skyview, whereas previously it was handled by ABC Engineering. So Disney may be out of the towers and transmitters business, but it is definitely in the radio business.

The interesting thing is that Skyview also distributes CBS News Radio. So these two TV networks are still very much in the network radio business almost as they were 25 years ago. The only missing network is NBC, who currently has a radio distribution deal with iHeart. This seems to be the new approach to network radio, handing off the expensive hardware part of the process to Skyview. Cumulus currently owns the old ABC Radio engineering and distribution division. It'll be interesting to see if they join the other networks with Skyview.

Disney/ABC does not own even any portion of LRN, and is not responsible for its operations in any way. Purely an affiliation agreement that LRN has signed with ABC - much like ABC News Radio had with Cumulus until 2012 or 2013.

I never said they owned it. I said very clearly that "this new relationship..." Just as they don't own Skyview. This is a different way of doing network radio.
