The CNN article points out that Sony has been enlarging its investment in content, as its seen its share of the electronics business shrink. It's been getting killed by Korean and Chinese companies who really control the industry now. Sony's first investment in music was buying Columbia Records from CBS in 1988. They bought RCA/Arista Records about 10 years ago, so they are the world's second largest record company (behind Universal). Sony ATV has been buying up publishing companies for the last 20 years, and this will make them the world's largest publisher.
In answer to the question why does Apple hold a developers convention every year? Because if they even begin to slow down, they will get passed very quickly by some upstart tech company.
And upstart tech companies often get bought up by Amazon, Google or Facebook, as well as Apple and Microsoft.
