Sony EMI deal

This is a complicated deal. Sony ATV Publishing is partly owned by the estate of Michael Jackson. The estate will have a 10% ownership in this.

EMI Publishing had been part of Capitol Records, until it was sold to Vivendi Universal in 2011. Sony bought a stake in EMI at that point. This sale gives them the rest of it.

The CNN article points out that Sony has been enlarging its investment in content, as its seen its share of the electronics business shrink. It's been getting killed by Korean and Chinese companies who really control the industry now. Sony's first investment in music was buying Columbia Records from CBS in 1988. They bought RCA/Arista Records about 10 years ago, so they are the world's second largest record company (behind Universal). Sony ATV has been buying up publishing companies for the last 20 years, and this will make them the world's largest publisher.

It's not just other manufacturers, it's the smartphone.

It's replaced laptops for a lot of people (Sony made those for a while), as well as Walkmen; turntables; radios -- both clock, standalone and headsets; CD players; MP3 players; desktop computers; speakers and stereo sound systems; boomboxes; tape, DAT and disc recorders; eReaders and cameras -- and now it's even competing with televisions.

It's amazing to think just how things have changed since 2005 even. I think the only popular Sony electronics is the game system.

Edit to Add: Smartphones also replaced video cameras. I suppose there is even more to the Sony formerly-manufactured list....

In answer to the question why does Apple hold a developers convention every year? Because if they even begin to slow down, they will get passed very quickly by some upstart tech company.

And upstart tech companies often get bought up by Amazon, Google or Facebook, as well as Apple and Microsoft.

At the same time, the French company Vivendi is looking to sell up to 50% of Universal Music Group, the world's largest record label, which owns the recording rights to tons of American music, including the Hank Williams catalog, the Beach Boys, MCA Records, Mercury Records, Motown, Capitol Records, EMI Records, and of course The Beatles.
