    I could see a throwback hip hop station doing well, as someone mentioned, or amp coming back, if alt does not perform well enough.

    Those tend to have a short shelf life.

    As we've discussed, Alt does better when it adds established alt hits and artists. But the change usually doesn't appeal to musical purists.

    Which is fine, because appealing to purists usually drives off more potential listeners than it attracts. This is even the case on classical radio. The most successful stations stick to the most familiar composers and their most familiar works, along with short pieces like Pachelbel's Canon in D that have entered mainstream consciousness. Play lesser-known works by the superstars or by unfamiliar (including all contemporary) composers and you kill any semblance of mass appeal your station may have had.
