97.3 The Machine - Talk That Rocks Debuts 3/1/18 2PM PT

pjc1961

Star Participant
As "Finesse" by Bruno Mars + Cardi B faded out mid-song at 2 PM PT on 3/1/18 on KEGY-FM-97.3, a simple Top Of Hour announcement
(still known as "KEGY and HD San Diego") played followed by
"Welcome To The Machine" by Pink Floyd, then "Hells Bells" by AC/DC. The same 2 songs repeated at the top of the 3PM hour.

There have been no on air announcements made since and no commercials as of this posting, one hour-plus into the "format flip".
Mostly classic rock of the more "active", loud, crunchy type.

I'm surprised that Entercom flipped 97.3 to hot talk, as I would've expected the station to flip to sports, branded as "97.3 The Game" (based on registered domains pointing out Energy's demise) while still handing off the Padres broadcasts to 97.3. After all, Entercom was committed to the Alternative format on 94.9 (which rebranded as ALT 94.9 last month), and wanted to get out of a crowded CHR battle as they did in other markets since their merger with CBS Radio.

I'm not surprised at all. SD loves rock (and has had a long illustrious history with it), and this format will work as a great sales pair with 94/9.

Music and Comedy? Let's hope MY Padres don't end up being the 'Comedy' they're talking about!! :) JG

With music provided by the "fat lady"?

Considering that all of those domains were registered by Local Media of San Diego to make it more difficult to launch a sports brand and they made no effort to hide that fact, only you were expecting them to become 97.3 The Game.

As for this lineup?

Woefully incomplete

The Men's Room is a good show, but it airs live in PM drive so you're going up against the DSC with yesterday's show. You only have one local show and it's in middays. I'm all for somebody trying to bring talk radio into the modern age but you need more than 8 hours of original programming a day, and you need to make an attempt to be relevant in mornings. The last thing you want to hear when you get in the car in the morning is the same conversation you listened to on the way home the night before!

Now, had they gotten DSC away from KFMB, they might be onto something. But right now this screams "we ran out of money before we launched the station."

As it turns out schedule-wise, an update to the website was made on Fri. 3/2/18 at 2pm when The Men's Room show debuted.

The morning drive time period is now listed as:

Rock & Comedy
6:00 AM TO 10:00 AM

Maybe another show imported via syndication - or possibly an original show emanating from San Diego. Stay tuned...

Gonna play spoiler: Kevin Kline is doing mornings starting the 29th.

I had hoped that Kevin Klein Live would have been able to stay, here in The Bay Area.
Enjoy the ride, San Diego, KKL is a well produced show. They're a hoot!!!

Crazy how San Diego now supports six rock stations: Rock 105.3, 101 KGB, 91X, Alt 94.9, KFMB-FM and now, 97.3 The Machine.

This seems like a cool experiment; Reviving the hot talk format that was long dropped when PPM started rolling out, but also adding in classic rock and sports.

However, I feel like the station will eventually shift to a dedicated FM sports talk format a year from now.

Well, I guess it took shorter than a year, as there is word that the station will flip to sports talk: https://radioinsight.com/headlines/...ercom-to-turn-off-97-3-the-machine-san-diego/

The entire station schedule has been cleared from the KEGY website. It looks like a flip is imminent and may happen at any moment.
