WWE Chief McMahon Plans to Bring Back the XFL

The quality of play was pretty bad the last time around. The budget does not look that impressive
so I'm not sure if they'll be able to rectify that.

You can't just throw a bunch of teams together and expect them to play good football. The sport is too complex, too dependent on everyone being totally in step, for that to happen. It might improve toward the end of the season, but as you say, the budget is going to prevent McMahon from signing any of the big-name players with outstanding skills his league will need to attract viewers and spectators. If there truly will be no gimmicks, it will be a dull product.

USFL with less cash. Then again, most of the players in the NFL wouldn't qualify as "big name players with outstanding skills." Which may be another reason why the ratings are slipping.

Agree fully. Football -- both pro and college -- was a lot healthier in 2001 and the quality isn't going to improve because more and more youth and high school football programs are being shut down -- concussion fears and skyrocketing insurance costs -- and more and more parents aren't letting their kids play football even in those places where high school football is still a big thing. The talent pool will continue to shrink.

The talent pool will continue to shrink.

Or perhaps it's changing due to the growth of other sports, especially basketball and baseball. There's been a flattening of talent in football...a sort of leveling of the playing field...so that there are not as many standouts the way there once was. I looked at the Heisman candidates this last year, and wasn't too impressed. Plus it seems to me these football players are avoiding becoming celebrities. That may be good for team play, but not good for creating must-see TV. These days a lot of the attention for some reason is on the head coach. Fantasy leagues are built on stars and personalities. If the game isn't creating those personalities, it will limit the potential of the league.

Might work this time. There does seem to be more available talent now than 17 years ago. If McMahon can get Tim Tebow to join the league, that would garner immediate interest.

That's funny...get Tebow and Manziel. Maybe Kaepernick. Lots of out-of-work talent. A lot better known than some of the QBs playing the game now.

Kaepernick? With McMahon's wife in the Trump administration? Not a chance. This league will be wrapped in red, white and blue from the moment the gates open for the first game. Hell, the ushers may have orders to beat up any spectator who refuses to rise for either that repurposed old English drinking song or that maudlin Irving Berlin show tune.

And all of that may not be totally crazy as a marketing strategy.
