Circa is to include a live news app

Live news app will be introduced soon.

Circa, a national digital news platform owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group is expanding its digital footprint with the debut of a video-driven, live news app next week.

Since the launch of Circa’s news site in July of 2016, Circa has gained a significant national audience on multiple platforms, including more than 31 million video views and 2.5 million fans on Facebook. The Circa news app provides unique live video covering a wide range of breaking news stories that are in-the-moment, pushing trending issues, alerting users as stories are developing.

Circa will now be able to capitalize on breaking news stories from Sinclair’s national news desk in Washington by combining resources to expand the depth and breadth of national coverage.

In addition, Sinclair says Circa will be evolving to take advantage of the breaking content from the more than 70 local Sinclair newsrooms from across the country. Circa, it says, “will have immediate access to more unique and compelling news stories that can be easily aggregated and fed to all consumer platforms.”

“As the largest producer of local news content in the country, our mission is to expand our news enterprise and evolve how we connect with consumers and address changing news consumption habits,” said Scott Livingston, Sinclair’s VP of news

Here is an Update

Very quietly last week, Sinclair laid off a number of people at their digital venture Circa.

Sources tell FTVLive that somewhere around 10 people, mostly web Reporters were told they can pack up their stuff and leave.

Of the staff that remained, sources tell FTVLive that they were directed to continue with ongoing editing projects, but aren’t going to be shooting too many new stories.

Word is that the remaining staff are going to be transitioned to the new Circa (staffers are not certain if it will have a new name or not?) which, we're told will model itself off Breitbart.

There are whispers - though no confirmation - that Sinclair is pursuing Steve Bannon himself to join the new Circa.

Could be that Sinclair is leveraging its existing news gathering assets and better integrating Circa into the existing Sinclair news infrastructure. The stories you've posted seem consistent with that. I think most of Sinclair's management attention will be dedicated to completion of the Tribune acquisition and then integrating those assets after the acquisition is complete. Since this is likely to take many months, I'm not sure they'll seriously pursue Bannon.
