Sorry, I could not find the old thread on this,
but according to my monitor in Pembroke Pines,
La Grande has completed their downgrade to their
new Miccosukee site and can henceforth be
referred to by the title of this thread,
RIP, R. Mambi!

The signal was pretty weak early this morning near Tamarac. Does Univision own the land the WAQI transmitter is on? Lennar Corp. has plans to build 385 homes in the area so maybe they made the owners an offer they couldn't refuse.

Univision sold the WAQI (former WGBS) transmitter site to Lennar, and is now diplexing from the WQBA site at the corner of Krome Avenue and The Trail (behind the casino).

I hope Univision made bank on the deal but do you believe WAQI will be adversely affected by downgrading?

I am sorry...I have to say it...I don't care what anyone thinks.

What a stupid move. Fine, sell the tower site for money. No one would be angry at you for it...we all need it in this industry.

BUT AT LEAST MAKE THE EFFORT TO KEEP YOUR 50,000 WATTS!

Seriously?

In a day and age were every watt means BETTER reception over cell phones and other items you'd rather CUT YOUR POWER? 30K day, 10K night?????

Terrible horrible decision. Almost makes me want to cry. THINK!

In theory, no one will disagree with you

All I can add is that they will be closer to the overwhelming majority of their listeners
and *maybe* Cuba will relax some of their anti-fascist protective barriers, or whatever they call them.

As another poster said, the move may actually improve the signal where the core audience lives.

In any case, the station has averaged a 0.3 to 0.4 in 18-49 for the last year or so.

"Anti-Imperialist" is the favorite expression.

The new pattern with 30 kw days only loses some population in Palm Beach County and NE Broward. None is significant for a Spanish language AM. And, the night pattern gives pretty good coverage of the target market.

You have to think of the transaction in terms of what the money can do for the whole enterprise vs. the unlikely possibility that AM stations can be attractively profitable in South Florida any more.

Tonight for the first time 700 WLW Cincinnati and 720 WGN Chicago were coming in like local stations on my car stereo. I guess Broward's loss is the midwest's gain.

Support, support, support their sponsors!
(if it was during the experimental period after midnight,
maybe WLW was firing up their old half-megawatt transmitter!)

There is an STA in effect, I believe, to allow much lower power operation while the site is being moved and diplexed into the WQBA towers.

Maybe you could pick them up because it's so damn cold in the North that even the radio waves wanted to get to where it's warm.

A picture was snapped and it looks like that old 1960's anti-war song,
"Where have all the towers gone?".

710 and 1140 are much clearer for tonight's Heat game here in SW Broward compared to previous nights. Did they crank up the power at the end of the move of WAQI to WQBA's site?

WQBA was operating at reduced power during the diplexing work to combine 710 and 1140. WAQI began with lower power, and then was raised to the licensed level.

Glad they finished the work and the signal is back. I had been using 107.5's HD 2 simulcast of 710 to tune into games. They also have 1140 on 107.5-HD3. Works great in my car!
