Maybe...in some systems the computer opens the mic, and he closes it. That may have been the problem here.

When the mic opens, it mutes the control room speakers, and the talent can be caught off guard.

Not saying that's what happened, but that's one explanation.

Any engineer who lets the automation system control the microphones should be fired. That's just dumb.

I've heard lots of times listening to the radio in the past, where there was a hot mic during a song, and the DJ was talking to someone doing a request over the phone, or talking to someone in the studio. Sometimes even a phone number would slip out over the air.

Engineers just do what they're told. So it wouldn't be their call.

But just about every function is handled by automation. Do you have a better explanation?

That reminds me of a situation about five years ago while listening to a station out of Joplin, MO. It's about 9 local time, and the regular jock is in evenings, while one of the others is at a live event. The live on location jingle plays, and the jock says where he's at. That ends, and a song starts. In the middle of that song, you hear him come on trying to record tracks for the next on location spot, but he keeps messing up, even uttering a curse word at one point.
