Twins coming back to WCCO AM

http://www.startribune.com/twins-radio-broadcasts-will-move-back-to-wcco-radio/458079313/

For the first 46 years of their existence, the Twins could always be found on WCCO radio. So in a sense, they are going home.

The Twins and WCCO will reunite for the 2018 season and beyond, multiple sources confirmed Thursday, after 11 seasons on other outlets. An announcement is expected as soon as Friday.

Interesting in that WCCO has no FM simulcast, so the Twins are moving to a band few under 50 listen to. Of course, baseball appeals to an older demo, so maybe that isn't necessary at this point.

I listen to the games on Sirius XM and always found it strange that the Twins network ID during the last few years has never mentioned the flagship station by call letters or slogan. Instead, it goes "This is Twins baseball on the Treasure Island Broadcasting Network," with the ID having been sold to a casino.

WCCO is a 50kw flamethrower so it will come in fine. Technically their FM simulcast is KMNB-HD2 (102.9-2). KMNB is co-owned Buzzn Country.
Compared to what they were on this is a major upgrade. They were on the Pohlad owned (same folks who own the Twins) KQGO 96.3 which is only 19,000 watts on a 77m stick NW of Minneapolis. St Paul east had issues picking it up

The ID wasn't sold to a casino. Treasure Island (the one in Red Wing, MN) has the naming rights to the radio network. Its no different than any other naming rights out there. Info on it

The only time they say an actual ID is when they "take 10 seconds to let affiliates ID themselves" or something of the nature (the usual top of the hour holler).

official Twins release
http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/262082386/twins-radio-broadcasts-set-to-return-to-wcco/

WCCO AM 830 returns as the Minnesota Twins' Twin Cities metropolitan area affiliate, highlighting a fully integrated radio partnership announced Friday by the organization in conjunction with Entercom Communications Corporation.

Starting with the 2018 season, WCCO AM 830 will air all Twins regular-season and postseason games as well as Spring Training coverage across the metro area. "The Minnesota Twins are ecstatic to be in partnership with Entercom and eager to play a role in helping the company implement a new vision for their radio properties across our marketplace," Twins president and CEO Dave St. Peter said. "The Twins are beyond thrilled to have this opportunity to return our radio broadcasts to WCCO AM 830. "Twins baseball on WCCO Radio was an Upper Midwest tradition for more than four decades. We look forward to building on that tradition with a new era of Twins baseball starting in 2018." Twins games were aired on WCCO AM 830 for the club's first 46 seasons from 1961-2006. As part of the partnership, the Twins will continue to produce all game broadcasts, including 30-minute pregame and postgame shows.

On the programming side, WCCO AM 830 and other Minnesota-based Entercom properties -- including 104.1 JACK FM and BUZ'N @ 102.9 -- are committed to a year-round lineup of baseball coverage featuring Twins players, coaches and broadcasters.

All Entercom properties will feature comprehensive Twins coverage during the season, including special promotions and gameday shows originating on location in and around Target Field, from Fort Myers, Fla., for Twins Spring Training and at community events across Twins Territory.

I understand naming rights. Boston's teams have had them over the years, too, but the ID has always mentioned the call letters pr slogan of the flagship station as well -- "the (sponsor's name here) WEEI Red Sox Radio Network," In New York, it's the "WFAN New York Yankees Radio Network, Powered by Jeep." The Twins' network ID struck me as unusual in that the flagship doesn't get a mention.

I've heard that practice only rarely. For example, the St. Louis Cardinals network uses the score for the outcue: "After three innings, the Mets lead the Cardinals 4 to 2". They only use a network name before the legal ID ("This is the Cardinals baseball network"). No mention of KMOX (current flagship). Neither did they mention KTRS when they were the flagship station for about 6 seasons in the late 2000s.

The only radio network I've heard out here that mentioned the flagship stations' calls is the WBBM Cubs Radio network. As far as I can remember, none of the NFL teams (Titans, Colts, Rams), NBA teams (Pacers) or other MLB teams (Reds) used an outcue featuring the flagship station. Nor any of the Big Ten college football networks that I've sampled.

Thanks for the info. I remember when the Red Sox introduced their call letters into the announcement. WTIC Hartford didn't like it one bit and would censor it by blanking out the mention as if it were an obscenity: "The (silence) Red Sox Radio Network."

I was listening to the Timberwolves game last night and all they say is "The Northland Ford Timberwolves radio network". They're also on WCCO

So it's a New York/Boston thing, eh? Even the Patriots have it, but no call letters are mentioned -- instead, the frequency and slogan are! "The (sponsor) 98-5 The Sports Hub Patriots Radio Network." When they were on WBCN, it was "the WBCN Patriots ROCK radio network." (which was certainly interesting to hear on their Springfield, Mass., affiliate WAQY -- Rock 102) Either most of the affiliates aren't as offended by this as WTIC is, or the flagships just don't care what they think.

It should be patently obvious that the Pohlad Family will soon be selling their two unsuccessful FM stations to Entercom.

Entercom is nowhere near the market cap in terms of station ownership. They will be able to absorb 95.3 & 96.3 easily and will likely do a better job of programming and selling spots for each. Entercom knows first hand what happens when you mix hipster-oriented and yuppie-oriented alt rock with radio broadcasts of baseball. It spells DOOM from a ratings standpoint.

I honestly don't know. The Vikings are just "the Vikings Radio Network" (or during pre-season when the radio is simulcast over the video its "Vikings Entertainment Network") but they have a "bumper" before they come back that says "The Flagship home of the Vikings is KFAN 100.3" which on some affiliates you'll hear (I hear it when I'm at the lake house and listening to it on either KKIN 94.3 Aitkin or KBLB 93.3 Nisswa/Brainerd and also on 1230AM/94.1/105.9 Mankato)

Ironically the call sign is KFXN because the KFAN-FM callsign is used in Texas on a AAA format station....when they were on 1130 doing sports it was KFAN before swapping with 100.3 which was talk. The KFAN AM is on a iheart owned station in Rochester, MN
