FOX/Disney deal

It's interesting looking at that map how much the Fox Sports Regionals control. The light blue areas are controlled by other companies like NESN in Boston, Root in the Northwest, Comcast in Illinois and the east, and MASN in mid Atlantic. The story says the regional nets are worth $20 billion alone, about 40% of the total price. So obviously expanding ESPN is a huge priority.

ESPN is hemorrhaging viewers. The regional sports networks are gaining viewers. Just look at how much YES is worth alone. Those are eyeballs that ESPN needs.

Thats interesting though I thought the reason for Fox to sell some of its divisions to Disney was to get a higher portion of Sky though.

Sky News asked Mr Murdoch if selling Sky was a “really emotional moment” for him.

He replied: “Yeah. We are very proud of Sky. I just thought we needed a real alternative, give people lots of choice, we thought you know, four or five channels – now what is it, 150 or something?

“And it’s a great company, employing a lot of people in this country.”

When asked which asset he was parting with most reluctantly, the businessman replied: “I think Sky.”

He said the move would see Fox “returning to our roots” of news and sports.

hands, from X-Men, Avatar and the Simpsons to FX Networks and National Geographic.

In a call with investors, Mr Murdoch defended the deal, saying: “We know a lot of you are wondering ‘why did they come to such a momentous decision? Are we retreating?’ Absolutely not. We are pivoting at a pivotal moment.”

Disney will seize control of Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

Fox will create a new company, spanning the Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox Sports, Fox Television Stations Group, sports cable networks FS1, FS2, Fox Deportes and Big Ten Network (BTN), the firm’s studio lot in Los Angeles and equity investment in Roku.

What will become of the distributors known as Disney-ABC Home Entertainment & Television Distribution and 20th Television? Will one absorb into the other? Or will it be known as Disney-Fox Television Distribution?

Disney-ABC distribution? But at this time this "New Fox" the division with Fox News and Fox O&O's will keep the Fox name.

However 20th Century Fox the division going to Disney and Fox Sports West Los Angeles are going to have either ESPN or 20th Century Disney name or the ABC Studios name depending on what is finalized in the deal. Note deal needs approval by DOJ, FCC and SEC over this.

What FCC approval is needed? There are no over the air licenses involved. It's fundamentally DoJ.

I would imagine they keep the studios separate for awhile at least.

What I am curious about is will the Fox FanFare return to the opening of Star Wars.

Yes Disney to remove Fox Content from Netflix app feed for apps Disney owns or have contracts with (Hulu) also Disney was mentioning talks to form a new on demand place that competes against Netflix once they get all the Fox content and Disney content out of places Disney is planning to end contracts with and put them in Disney owned venues.
Can Netflix sue for breach of contract if Disney does this?
