Dan Johnson, Tampa Bay broadcaster

Dan L. Johnson died Oct. 24, 2017 from a battle with brain cancer. Dan started his career in broadcasting in the mid 50's as an announcer at WPIN Radio in St. Petersburg. After several positions as an air personality WTSP radio, Tampa, WGSR radio in Miami while working his way thru college, graduating, 1962, from from Tampa University with a BA in Management, as he held a sales position with WFLA Radio. In 1966 Dan obtained a construction permit for the pioneering rocker station WFSO AM in Pinellas Park. It later became WPLP talk radio. Next constructed WXCR FM after selling WXCR, Dan consulted for other stations. Next was obtaining a permit for WTMV TV in Lakeland, next WGSA TV in Savannah was purchased. Dan was born in Amherst, WI, and lived most of his life in Pinellas County, very active in community affair especially in chambers of commerce, vice chairman of Pinellas County Board of Adjustment, Comissioner and Mayor of St Pete Beach. Dan is survived by Jo, his wife of 49 years; and sons David and Ryan .
