KWHI AM 1280 Brenham C.P.

KWHI is planning to relocate broadcast tower halfway between Brenham & Katy, increase power from 1KW to 3.8 KW, and go directional toward Houston, allowing the new signal to boom into The Woodlands, Tomball, Cypress, Katy, Sugar Land, etc. Construction Permit for KWHI expires October 2019. Great idea or waste of time/money? See ---> https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/patg?id=KWHI-AM&s=C&h=D

The 5 mV/m daytime signal will barely reach the far NW corner of Harris County, and the 10 mV/m won't touch it at all. The coverage is basically Washington, Waller and Austin counties, and not even complete on those. In fact, the new 5 mV/m coverage area only has 90,000 persons in it.

It won't have a usable signal in any of the towns you mention, and at 72 watts at night, will be pretty useless as a Houston contender.

The reality is KWHI and the FM are quite successful and do a good job serving Brenham and the area. This will only help them have a better signal in areas that are already important to them. The fact they can afford to do this says a good deal about the health of the station. If they were failing, they couldn't afford it. Contrary to the AM is dead crowd, there are AM stations that do well.

They have done remotes in Sealy, Bellville and other towns. They have had a presence in these areas for some time, if not years and years.

Another thing: one move is not always the only move. There could be more in the planning stages.

I agree that this is not going to make what appears to be a pretty successful local station, billing $35 to $40 k a month, into a suburban Houston market. I think the power upgrade is more to give a better signal to its market area of smaller towns on the outskirts of the Houston market where there is little local media for advertisers to use.

That sounds right to me. Nobody is working the Bellville, Sealy and Hempstead markets. When you're the only ones seeking radio advertising in those towns, it can really add up.
