Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop

Since Entercom has said they want this done by the end of the year, I suspect multiple shoes will drop across the country in the next three months. Whether they will come all at once or gradually, I don't know. If it's going to work its way up the coast, the next markets to go would be San Francisco and Sacramento.

As of October 10, 2017, Entercom has announced that KZOK, KJAQ, and KFNQ will be spun off.

So, after they get them, they're getting rid of them?

EDIT: I just read the info on KFNQ's Wiki, and now I see what you're all talking about. This horse-trading of stations can be confusing to those like myself who aren't radio-business savvy. :)

I'm thinkin' that Bonneville and Hubbard will be kickin' the tires on the FM's, while Salem would most likely looking at the AM (who else would want it?).

The items that are for sale make me think Bonneville is off the table. CBS wants to trade so then what does Hubbard have in some other market that would work- remember these are tax swaps.

PS - Rob, my "guess with no credible information" on 10/6 was only off by 4 days (2 days of which were the weekend).

Bonneville has owned classic rock stations before. KZPS in Dallas did classic rock under Bonneville for around 10 years before it sold it (and alternative KDGE) to Evergreen Media in '97. I understand the accounting was a little ridiculous as booze advertising was masked from corporate as "beverage," and Bonneville didn't take casino ads. However, it didn't seem to have any prohibition against playing "Stairway to Heaven."

Both Bonneville and Hubbard have been mentioned as possible buyers for some of the Entercom/CBS spinoffs. The only information publicly available is that the total deals are expected to involve 11 stations in three markets which have had revenue of $19-20 million in the first six months of the year. Plus, after the $57.8 million Entercom will get from EMF, Entercom will get another $207 million in cash after the divestitures. Not sure you can infer much about Seattle from that, though that seems to rule out Cumulus entering the market and iHeartMedia upgrading its cluster.

I honestly think Bonneville could purchase the two FMs and the AM. They already run 710 ESPN and have additional slots where there is sports overlap, where they could use KFNQ 1090 to run overflow sports, versus putting the overflow on 770 KTTH. Bonneville's stations skew more towards men as is, adding Jack FM and KZOK and KFNQ, would give them huge overall male demographics/ratings. Bonneville has run Classic Hit and Classic Rock stations in the past, and they could use one of the two FM's to put 1090 KFNQ on an HD2 and perhaps 770 KTTH on the other FM HD2. I could see them spin off the Phoenix cluster to Hubbard, as they are far lower rated in that market with their three stations, and put that money towards purchasing the spinoffs from Entercom/CBS. They most likely would leave CBS Sports Radio on 1090, with maybe a few local shows thrown in the mix.

KFNQ is already on Jacks HD3. Jack also has not had a dedicated studio for a few years. I think they run it through an unused bus in a production room. KFNQ runs off the network 24/7. Both of those stations only need rack space. KZOK would be the only one that needs a real studio.

I would rather see Entercom pick up Bonneville's stations in Phoenix. They seem to fit will with what Entercom's acquiring from CBS. In fact, it would reunite 92.3 (when it was KKFR) with the three stations that were spun by iHeartMedia/Clear Channel when they acquired AMFM in 2000.

Why do they need KTTH on an HD2? It's already on 94.5 K233BU. I don't see format changes to any stations, or even any branding changes. KJAQ and KZOK have high ratings.
