Update CBS has confirmed the deal between CBS News Radio and Skyview Networks

CBS News Radio will team with Skyview Networks for distribution, inventory management and sales effective Jan. 1, 2018, it was announced today by David Rhodes, President of CBS News.

The new exclusive multi-year agreement coincides with the expiration of the current distribution agreement with Westwood One and will enable CBS News Radio to further strengthen its direct relationship with its prominent family of affiliated stations and control its affiliate relations, marketing, sales, distribution and best-in-class technology in-house.

"CBS News Radio will continue to provide the best original news reporting while also delivering individual service directly to affiliates to assure that our partners succeed in today's changing marketplace," Rhodes said.

"We are proud to forge a new partnership with CBS News Radio," said Ken Thiele, President of Skyview Networks. "This agreement powers CBS News Radio on sales and broadcast distribution operations to provide the finest and most accessible experience for affiliates, listeners and advertisers."

"Our new agreement with Skyview Networks will strengthen our distribution and advertising sales efforts," said Charles Pavlounis, Chief Financial Officer for CBS News. "Westwood One has been a fantastic partner for many years, and we thank everyone there for their dedication to CBS News Radio. These changes will assure our 30 million weekly listeners that they will continue to get the highest level of quality journalism they are accustomed to, while also providing for new opportunities for growth."

"It has been an honor to work with the CBS News executive team on their plans for CBS News Radio," said Jeanne-Marie Condo, Executive Vice President, General Manger for Skyview Networks. "Skyview is experiencing healthy, dynamic growth, and CBS News Radio is designed to excel as an audio platform."

CBS News Radio was awarded three 2017 Edward R. Murrow awards by the Radio, Television & Digital News Association including the top award for Overall Excellence. It also received its fifth consecutive Best Newscast award for World News Roundup and the Breaking News award for its coverage of the Pulse Nightclub massacre. CBS News Radio has won more Murrow Awards in the 21st century than any other radio news network for Overall Excellence, Best Newscast and Best Continuing Coverage.

The reality is that this kind of top-of-the-hour national news is not a growing revenue model. The stations that run this kind of thing are mostly AM stations. The scary thing is how many of those CBS AM stations will now carry this kind of programming now that they're owned by Entercom? CBS News Radio will have to find new ways to package their content to get on the more popular stations in major markets. It's no longer a guaranteed clear.

When ABC spun off all their O&O stations, they suddenly found themselves with far fewer stations carrying their Top of the Hour product. CBS has maintained a good sounding product (even with the smaller reporting staff after buyouts last year) but how long can they keep this going if the CBS O&Os that are going to be spun off drop the hourlies?

The sale of the O&Os apparently came with a promise they'd continue the affiliation for a certain number of years, just like ABC. It doesn't guarantee they'll carry the hourlies in their totality. There's already talk of shortening them to a minute. Maybe not at all, and just use the audio reports with a local anchor.

The big change with the new distributor is that CBS will deal directly with the affiliates, rather than some middle man. They feel they can sell their product better when they deal direct. If they lose an affiliate, they know the reason, rather than trusting the distributor for that information. ABC has been aggressive in signing up new affiliates. By the same token, ABC News has a broader range of products for affiliates than CBS. Perhaps now CBS will become more competitive in creating new content options. If not, you're correct that the clock is ticking on this kind of hourly news. The constant bashing of "mainstream media" by conservative talk radio doesn't help.

ABC Radio since 2015 is a podcasting brand made by Disney and distributed by skyview. I may not find ABC Radio or ESPN affiliates in My area but I can easily find ABC Radio and ESPN via Slacker Radio app and various podcasting venues.

CBS wants to go after yes growth like podcasts and streams. I can see the CBS News Radio name as a podcast brand via skyview if Entercom all news stations like KCBS, KNX and WCBS decides to cut the affiliation from CBS in 2018.

CBS News Radio is already streaming via an iTunes APP: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cbs-radio-news/id416142867?mt=8

I don't think they need Skyview to podcast. I think they can simply use the CBS News platform you already linked.

I'm also not aware that ABC is using Skyview to distribute their podcasts. They also seem to be using iTunes.

The stream is more likely the direct way to get news to users rather than podcast, which would require a user to download first.

Probably similar to the old ABC-I and the ABC-E networks.

ABC Information and ABC Entertainment networks still exist today, as does the ABC FM network.

TTBOMK there is no ABC Men or ABC Women networks. That seems to be sales information, not an actual network offering.

Skyview does distribution and national spot sales for ABC. They don't do affiliate sales.

So just like ABC, who sold their stations and network ten years ago, CBS has sold its radio division, but is not leaving radio. In fact, they're keeping a big hand in it. The only negative I see is that all those features air squarely at AM news/talk stations, many of which are seeing aging and declining audiences.

Also, some of those features, including Entertainment Tonight, Rachel Ray, and Dave Ross, have been syndicated by Westwood One. So that will be a loss for them.
