Entercom's Impact on NYC

Since Entercom will take over CBS's stations in all its markets; what do you think will happen to the NYC stations?
I think 92.3 will change, maybe Entercom can bring Modern Rock back to NYC. 102.7 may change. I hope CBS FM stays the same.
What about 101.9? Will that still be sports? Does Entercom own now the rights to broadcast Yankee Games and other sporting events?

Yes. Entercom will inherit all contracts currently held by CBS Radio, unless otherwise specified in the language.

First, it should take at least 6 months for a possible closing, and that all depends on a Department of Justice review, too. If there are any transfer opposition filings or CBS shareholder objection issues, it could take longer.

Then there is going to be an integration phase, where systems and procedures are unified and new management structures are put in place.

For the moment, format changes are not likely to occur other than some adjustments in markets where the merged company has to do spin-offs. Or where the new Entercom gets stations in other markets in exchange for the stations they spin off.

Boston, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and Seattle are some of the cities where Entercom has to either surrender the license, Spin off stations , sell stations and or send stations to trusts in able for the CBS Radio/Entercom deal to go through and meet ownership caps. So far KDND Sacramento's Entercom Station has surrender its license back to FCC.

I don't have a clue at this time about how Entercom will specifically handle New York at this time.

Entercom did not surrender the kDND license to meet market caps. They did it to remove the pending hearing on license renewal from the company record before the Commission. They have no other licenses with issues as big as a station contest causing the death of a listener, so there will be no other licenses cancelled. It's a unique and creative move to show candor and the ability to face up to a past mistake.

Entercom does not have to "Handle" New York at all. The CBS cluster is under the limits, and definitely does not have 40% of the market revenue.

For those yearning for a return of Modern Rock to the NYC airwaves, consider this:

Entercom upon acquiring Lincoln Financial's former stations in the Miami, FL market discontinued the AM/FM simulcast of 790/104.3 The Ticket and flipped the latter to Modern Rock (as 104.3 The Shark). I thought at the time the format choice was a poor one for the market and that a WMMR-style rock station would fare better. Thus far, 104.3 The Shark's ratings have been abysmal.

The company has an affinity for the format. They own Modern Rock outlets in Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Kansas City, Miami, Sacramento, Buffalo and perhaps other markets I've overlooking. The only reason they probably don't have such a station in Denver or Boston is because competitors already had the space claimed in those places.

It's highly unlikely that either 92.3 or 102.7 will flip formats. Are tweaks possible? You bet. Outright format flips? Highly unlikely.

The company has an affinity for the format.

That may be, but they are keeping the CBS programming staff, not replacing them with Entercom people. The CBS programming staff is aware of the format hole in NYC, as well as the history of the format in the market. Entercom stated they have lots of respect for the people they're inheriting, and I'm expecting them to allow the CBS programming people to program the NYC market as they see fit.

Entercom's impact on Sports programming. Wait Entercom/CBS Radio does not manage KNBR San Francisco CUmulus does that. However CBS Sports/Talk programming was an agreement between CBS and Cumulus a few years back though.

And the new Entercom will have rights to 45 sports teams including CBS Radio’s portfolio. CBS Radio has rights to professional teams in several major markets including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
CBS Radio has many sports radio stations including WFAN in New York, 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston and KNBR in San Francisco. It also has the CBS Sports Radio Network which has over 300 affiliates across the country.

However, to comply with FCC rules, the company will have to divest stations in markets where both groups own multiple stations including Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

All of the CBS employees will probably have to fill out new job applications as a formality, regardless of length of time with the old company.

Not job applications, but all their benefits will likely change, they'll have to close out their existing retirement plan, and reset any automatic deductions or auto-pays.

Usually the job applications simply transfer, along with their seniority.

$25 million in cuts? Sounds like absolutely everyone is getting fired. What would replace all-news on WCBS, WBBM, KCBS, etc

Hardly. The CEO of CBS Radio has already said he's leaving. That'll save a bunch. Cumulus promised about the same in "synergies" when they bought Citadel. They did it in about a year without any major cuts.

Most of these cuts that Entercom will have to make are mainly at the corporate level. Those cuts intend to eliminate redundant corporate positions.

Many of the cuts will be in the markets where there are currently both Entercom and CBS clusters. Sales, traffic, engineering and many other internal functions can likely be consolidated. Savings will also come from co-locating all stations.

There will also be savings by moving the CBS offices to Philly and closing the Nashville support office.

Future savings can come from greater leverage on purchasing, further consolidation of traffic, accounting, billing and collections and even in legal and other support functions.

Combining all digital / new media operations looks like a big area for savings and greater market presence.

And I am sure I missed a number of areas.
