"That 70's Show" debuts on USA Dance Mix

Star Participant
Our 40 YEARS OF DANCE format that we pioneered (currently 1977-2017) is doing quite well. So what to do with 1976, that would be year 41 (we play about 25 songs from 1976). Those songs have resulted in a new show (our only program change since our debut almost 3 years ago). “That 70’s Show” is now heard Sunday nights 9-midnight Eastern. At first we only considered Disco & Dance songs outside our 40 year range for the program, but the late 70’s were a goldmine for Disco & Dance music as it slowly took over Top-40 Radio. Thus we decided to include 1977-1979 tracks as well.

Every Sunday night listeners can enter the twilight zone and relive the 1979 Dance/Club radio scenes. Our playlists for the show is 21 hours long!!! So what does that mean? It means the show will have lots of variety. You may hear Chic’s “Good Times” one week and not again for several weeks. This will not be the same 40 songs over and over.

******You might think USA Dance Mix is just an oldies station but we're not. About 60% of our tracks are from the years 2000+.

Our daily schedule: Mon. (less oldies, newer sounds), Tue. & Thur. (more Funk & Soul Crossover in the mix), Wed. (mostly female artists and vocals), Fri. till noon (Dance songs with “Love” in the title), Fri. noon-9pm Sun. (the best of the best), That 70’s Show (Sun. 9-midnight).

Not really, just 3 words from the dictionary, does anybody "own" them? The music is from the 70's and it's a show, case closed.

Just three words that evoke a very successful TV series. You could have called it The 70s Show, to avoid an issue. But you chose to use THAT for some reason. Doesn't matter to me. Tell it to the judge.

But he could call it "Kung Fu Fighting" or "Muskrat Love" if he wants to because, while titles of TV shows can be copyrighted, song titles cannot. Or does that only apply to song titles reused on later songs, not repurposed as titles of any other thing? I suspect the former, because "One Day at a Time" was both a well-known song and TV series and they had nothing to do with each other.

You can't copyright a song title with regards to other songs. That's why we can have lots of songs with the same title.

But if I name a restaurant after a song, that becomes an issue.

So the producers of "One Day at a Time," the series, had to work out a deal with the publisher of "One Day at a Time," the '70s country hit, in order to name their show?

I'm the first to make it a 40 year specific period. Other are playing Retro or "classic" (and they don't include recent or current tracks). Despite what Perry says it is working great. How does he know anyway? Listeners are up, royalties are up...........a very unique sound (mixing the old with the new). It's not the same ole station that everybody else is doing and you find everywhere (aka Perry's station).

Sounds very niche (very).

Not really, true Dance music lovers like and apprecaite the past (history) as well as the current. Why limit yourself (or your station) to just playing retro OR new stuff.............when you can play them both? Give it a listen you may like it, but if you're more into EDM, David Guetta and Skrillex........it's probably not for you.

WARNING: Long Post

I had previously stated in another post that dance music means different things to different people. As a "true" (subjective) dance music lover, I grew up listening to a variety of electronic dance music (much of which is ignored nowadays), although my interests came primarily from alternative/new wave roots and what I personally experienced in the clubs. It mostly started in the early-mid 80’s-early 90’s with my affinity for artists like:

As my affinity for electronic/dance music has grown, my passion for trance and progressive house became stronger. I would have to say two of my all-time favorite artists are Offer Nissim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPlr8nR6mVQ and ATB. Over the past few years, I can still appreciate remixes from artists like EDX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0j5dZcbKBs, as well as relatively newer artists like Tom Swoon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYtnK25DZao, A.R.D.I.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEw7ldI364I, and Project 46: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDZIdekSsSk .

In any case, there is so much variety in dance music that it is wrong to assume that one would not be a true dance music lover even if they did enjoy some occasional EDM.

Much of your list bordrers on Punk and Alternative (I would not consider either to be "true" Dance music, but you have the right, and that's just my opinion). Your taste is all over the map and I don't think most are willing to take it to your level.

Apparently, you completely missed the point of my post. I acknowledge and respect many different aspects of dance music. Furthermore, don't tell me that isn't "true" dance music. You make me question that you ever experienced club life in the 80's/early 90's.

I also wanted to ask if you thought Pharrell and Fresh Prince were "true" dance. Aren't they in your playlists?
