Anybody airing Christmas music yet?

WWOD Woodstock VT flipped to Christmas today. This is a '60s-'70s oldies station serving the Hanover-Lebanon-White River Junction area of NH/VT. The holiday music mix seems to be the same as most other stations are using, no added emphasis or playlist depth on music from the '60s and '70s. Considering that the last song I'd heard on the station in my car on Thanksgiving Day was "(You're) Having My Baby," the first of many spins of "My Favorite Things: that greeted me this morning for the ride home was actually a pleasure!

Normally, when K-104.7 has an entry in the Charlotte Thanksgiving Parade, the station is playing Christmas music. And one of the parade hosts mentioned they play Christmas music all the time. But before the taped coverage of the parade, I drove home from my aunt's house and checked, but unless someone considers "Faith" by George Michael to be a Christmas song, they were not.

If "Faith" can be a Christmas song, can "(You're) Having My Baby" be one, too?

KARY Yakima flipped today, 100.9 Cherry FM.

Iheart has flipped 104.1 FM San Francisco for Santa FM.

Sooooo ... any surprises this year other than launch being a few days early or late? Any new flippers in top 50 markets or same old same old?

KPLZ flipped in Seattle last week. They've never done it before.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KISQ

KISQ HD-2 104.1 FM San Francisco is a surprise one though because KOIT is usually the go to Christmas station for the Bay Area at this time of year.

But it's an HD-2. Wouldn't a main signal have to be considered the "go-to" station, considering that the majority of listeners in any market are unable to "go to" an HD-2 signal? Might KOIT or some other station have a later flip in mind?

Interestingly Cleveland, Columbus and Detroit markets air more holiday songs than the top 3 radio markets in the nation.

With the season upon us, holiday music has proven to be successful around the country on the radio airwaves. Over the last several years, according to Nielsen, the number of stations that swap out their regular formats during the holiday season has been rising, with some stations making the switch as early as Halloween. Of the 1,942 AM/FM radio stations Nielsen BDSradio monitored in 2015, 171 stations made the switch, giving listeners more than enough variety on the radio dial to get in the holiday spirit.

So which markets and formats are making the switch? The change isn't ubiquitous, but many stations that are flipping the holiday switch seem to be reaping the benefits of increased listeners. AC stations lead the way, making the switch more than any other format. AC accounts for 43% of all holiday music airplay and has the largest music library of all, with almost 2,800 titles. Christian AC follows, making up 22% of the holiday music airplay, with 432,000 spins and 1,763 titles. Classic Hits, Country and Adult CHR round out the top five formats, with a combined 20% play of holiday music airplay.

Making the switch to all-holiday music seems to be paying off. According to Nielsen Audio, holiday music significantly increases the share of listening for the format. Between the November and Holiday survey periods from 2012 to 2015, AC stations saw their share of audience among listeners 6 and older jump an average of 72%, compared to the rest of the year. And the combined audience to the top AC holiday music stations across the top 10 markets has grown from 27 million weekly listeners (6 and older) in 2012 to 30 million in 2015, an 11% increase. This equates to a total of 3 million more Americans tuning in to all-holiday music stations over the three-year period.

However, it may be surprising that the top three markets -- New York, Los Angeles and Chicago -- don't make the top five list when it comes to markets with the most holiday music airplay. Rather, Cleveland tops that list with 48,000 plays, as three stations in Cleveland generate more than 12,000 spins of holiday music. Columbus, OH, ranks number two with 47,000 and Detroit ranks number three three with 46,000 plays.

KEGA-FM (101.5 The Eagle, which just swapped morning show hosts with KUDD-FM/Mix 105.1, and more can be found out on the Utah forum in this site) in SLC in Utah is playing Christmas music and they are a Country station. Wow, a Country station playing christmas music? Haven't I heard about this from a LA radio station last time with the same format as KEGA-FM?

Why would The Eagle in SLC play wall-to-wall Christmas music? At least K-Bull isn't doing it (I guess). However, despite playing all-day Christmas music, they are playing Christmas music that is country music as well. That is a weird way to play Christmas music, but kind of acceptable.

Sometime during the weekend K-104.7 switched. I do like their old-fashioned station IDs with Christmas music. And it's supposed to rain tomorrow, so I guess I'll be listening when I get my exercise. A local mall plays their music.

Also, America's Best Music is playing a Christmas song after every commercial break and after 6-minute newscasts. It's weird to hear that female voice who has taken the place of Jeff Rollins and Carl Hampton saying "sounds of the season" between two songs that aren't related to Christmas in the least. This is my first Christmas season hearing America's Best Music since they dumped the DJs.

My local Tampa Bay Christmas station 105.5 WDUV just started playing Christmas music already, a few days earlier than last year, in which they started very late in the middle of December.

I don't know when WDUV started playing Christmas music, but I started listening to it yesterday and they were playing Christmas music.

I wished Magic 94.9 would play Christmas music instead. They were very popular for that (it was a staple in Tampa Bay during the holiday season), along with the 2 major Christian stations on 90.5 and 91.5 (Joy FM). 93.3 and 101.5 will start playing that one Mariah Carey Christmas song soon.

Considering that country artists have a long history of making Christmas albums, I'm surprised more country stations don't flip for the holidays. There are certainly enough format-ready songs out there to make it work.

KKGO "Go Country 105" Los Angeles flipped a few weeks ago to Xmas. Surprisingly, I haven't heard anything about KFKF-94.1 Kansas City. KCKC-102.1 is the Christmas station in Kansas City now, and 94.1 used to air wall-to-wall Xmas music for years during the holidays.
