LPFM & LPTV Combine Forces

K-JOI, the LPFM station that launched Feb. 19, can be heard at 104.3 FM and on TV for those who watch TV with an antenna at KHSC (Channel 16.1). This is a first time in local broadcasting where a low power FM station is being carried on a local digital TV channel. The Biola-based radio station is simulcasting its "All Time Favorites" format through an agreement with Cocola Broadcasting. Along with the music, the TV and online offerings provide more information about the artists.

I've often advocated that LPFMs and AM stations take advantage of the multicasting capabilities of DTV by leasing a channel. KAXT in the San Francisco area has been doing this almost since the start of DTV. There are a lot of LPTV stations that have the open channel capacity and would be happy to lease a sub-channel for very little money. Plus, radio stations are not limited to the DMA where their studios or transmitters are located. They're free to broadcast anywhere.

However, the circumvents the reason why LPFM was created in the first place. The purpose was for very localized public service.
