360 Systems Instant Replay alternative?

Small Market Guy

Is there another device that does the same job as an Instant Replay? $2000 for a machine that plays an mp3 file when you push a button seems a bit steep.

Well, like a lot of things, it doesn't do much but what it does it does very well. Our system is at least a dozen years old, & the hard drive whines like crazy, but the air talent likes it.

My ops manager found a way to set up a hot key system on an I-pad. Of course, you can't get that many buttons on that small a screen. He was pushing to replace our ancient Instant Replay with a second touch screen that would work off our Simian automation. But I'll probably just get a newer used 360 systems since we really don't have the room for two screens in the control room.

Soft keys and a computer app?

I'm not certain if all playout software will do this, but some programs like DAD will give you a software button panel for instant access to audio elements. It seems if you have this, it's not so hard to imagine programming the buttons to respond to keys from a device like this:

Maybe you can talk to the developer of whatever playout software you're using. I agree with you, $2k for a machine that plays MP3 audio at the push of a button is expensive. Especially given the probability that you already have software for playing audio. You just need a way to trigger some predefined files conveniently.

I used Jazzler at my old station it's good, but I want something independent of the computers. The IT guy won't let us install ANYTHING on them, so Jazzler is a no-go.

We use AudioVault, which has hot keys, but again I don't want anything on computers. I just want to hit a button and get sounds. Preferably something I can buy myself and not have to wait for management to buy and the engineer to install. It took me almost a year to get a $20 memory chip for my computer.

@tpt: As far as the hard drive whining why not upgrade it? I've been converting them to solid state drives and have had great luck with them. In fact I'll be lofting one on ebay as I finally landed a DR600 to upgrade a personal production studio.

As far as an alternative, I've used Jazler Show and it works well. Even the high school students I mentor had no problem with it.

Maybe something like these..? Some units are self-contained sample-playback devices, while others are simply USB or MIDI controllers meant to send commands to software or hardware samplers. There are a variety of self-contained devices, such as drum machines with tap-pads, and samplers with toe-pads/pedals for guitarists.

You might be able to make a bit-for-bit copy of the original hard drive. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a replacement hard drive from 360 Systems (if your unit is still supported).

I have an Instant Replay with a SCSI drive that has failed. In the past I converted Digicart IIs from SCSI to IDE drives but 360 Systems does not sell the kit anymore. I would like to save the machine. Anybody had luck switching one from SCSI to IDE?

Thanks

I have a Digicart II that I would love to upgrade to a solid state hard drive. It currently has a SCSI drive in it. How do you upgrade it to solid state??? Does someone sell a kit to do that?

I've done a SSD conversion on a 360 instant replay but it already had the SCSI to IDE done. From there I added a IDE to PATA and a PATA SSD drive. Worked great but you have to keep the drive under 8gig, preferably 4gig.
