- Frandsen's Feature, I.I.N.M., lasted in that form until 1966 - after which host Tom Frandsen got his own half-hour series, Tom Frandsen F.Y.I. (expanded to an hour around 1967), and what was by then KNBC's movie series was reconstituted as a hostless Movie 4 (a title already in use by WNBC-TV New York and WRC-TV Washington, DC). All were thrown by the wayside in 1968 when the station launched its two-hour KNBC News Service (a.k.a. Newservice), and picked up Mike Douglas' daily yakker.

I lived next door to Tom Frandsen on Bayshore Ave. when he was living in the Belmont Shore section of Long Beach, CA. He and his wife were very nice people and big boosters of Long Beach. He later went into the real estate business and did extremely well. I believe his daughter sells real estate in the same area.

This schedule really brings back memories. KCOP had "Passport To Adventure" with Hal and Hadla Linker. The big draw was that his travelogues were in color (back when color broadcasting was new for the independents and only available in the evenings). Bill Burrud had a similar series called "Wanderlust" on channel 13.

KTLA's "Cartoon Carousel" I believe was hosted by "Skipper Frank" Herman and his puppets. Legendary VO artist Walker Edmiston had a similar show with puppets on the same channel--and it was all live TV.

Ah, those were simpler times.

Re who had the first half-hour local newscast, I know
that WAGA had a 45-minute local newcast, "Panorama
News," from 6-6:45 PM in 1962 (CBS News followed at 6:45).
But that fall Ch. 5 dropped CBS News (and wouldn't air it again
until 1966 or '67), cut the newscast back to 30 minutes, and
aired "Amos 'n' Andy" at 6:30. Both WAGA and WAII (now WXIA)
had 30-minute newscasts at 11 PM by the summer of '62; WSB
began one that fall.

KYW-TV 3 Cleveland began a half-hour Newscast Monday, May 11, 1961 at 12 Noon under the name "Eyewitness News"..With a 3-Person Newsteam:

John "Bud" Dancy-News
Jim Graner-Sports
Dick Goddard-Weather (His First day on the air)

Here's The TV Guide ad for the premiere:

But since this is a thread about Southern California, it should be mentioned that KTLA's Stan Chambers had already been a TV news reporter and sometime anchor in LA for 12 years at the time of this schedule - since 1957. Stan finally retired in 2007 after 60 years in the business.

I note that the big three all had just 15 minute local newscasts. Who was the first network affiliate that expanded to 30 minute local news?

While The thread is about Southern California, I was referring to the question quoted above..I could have made that more clear..Sorry about that..
