Tory Ryden leaves WMTW, news business

Her last newscast was at 6PM tonight. It was well-known in the business that she was departing at the end of February sweeps. She is retiring from the news business to spend more time with her new husband and blended family of seven kids. She is staying in the area. Steve Minich joined Tory on the set for a package of highlights from Tory's lengthy tenure at Channel 8. Tory had been solo anchoring the 6 and 11PM weekday newscast following Jon Camp's exit after his contract was not renewed. Last one out at WMTW, turn off the lights...

Seems odd to go from five nights a week, fulltime, to zero. The post above says Ryden will stay in the area to take care of her family. You'd think she'd continue to do maybe a Saturday or Sunday newscast. Even the most devoted mom wants to get out of the house one night a week.

After being a familiar face for so many years in the Portland market, it's too bad viewers won't even be seeing her occasionally. Maybe she'll decide she wants to come back after a while off.

Tory's a noteworthy citizen of Cape Elizabeth, so I expect her to play a more prominent role in civic affairs.

After several years in PR and a stint as an independent video producer, Tory has resurfaced as a reporter for WCSH. She also appeared Wednesday morning on her old station (WMTW) as part of the "Ken & Mike" segment. It was, as they say, awkward...

"Spending time with family", is just a blanket excuse to say that she was fired/contract was not renewed.
