CKBA 850 FLIPS TO FM

Seems like a huge reduction in coverage area moving from am to fm.

A very valid point.
Does this mean they should add an FM repeater? Or is there an actual hole in the market for another radio station to serve areas that have been left out?

On the RadioWest board Jon from Edmonton mentions he cannot hear them at all at his location due to dominance from CJUV 94.1 in Lacomb (near Red Deer) and splatter from CBC Radio One 93.9 Edmonton. On 850 CKBA was a regular in Edmonton.

The list of existing AM stations in rural Alberta is shrinking real fast. Two more are set to flip to FM later this year, CKVH 1020 High Prairie and CHLW 1310 St. Paul. Also I hear that CKKY 830 in Wainwright will re-apply shortly with new proposed contours. Their application for an FM flip was rejected earlier this year due to concerns over those initial contours.

What is the purpose on flipping to FM? Can't a full-service AM station survive these days?
