QUESTION ABOUT WYLL

OldChicago

Frequent Participant
I know that the C.E. of WYLL reads this group. I have a question. When I was in Chicago a few months ago, I noticed that WYLL uses it's Des Plaines XMTR during the day, and the new s/w suburban site at night. Is this going to continue. Are there plans to operate from the new site 24-hours, and discontinue use of the Des Plaines site. Just curious. They should do this. They probably could get quite a bit of money for that property in Des Plaines.

The engineering consultant that developed the WYLL Lockport,IL site has told us that he could not develop a daytime pattern with sufficient protection for KSL from that location. So at this point, there is no plan to operate permanently from that location during the daytime.

Also, the land in DesPlaines, belongs to a private party and is leased by WYLL. So WYLL would not receive any money from the sale of the DesPlaines land.

Maybe someday the FCC protection rules will change a bit and it will make sense to move the whole operation to Lockport.

With the night pattern covering the right areas of the Chicago market; is it possible to use the night pattern for the day pattern too? Basing on the theoretical pattern developed for night use, I don't see where it would hurt to use that pattern too. Maybe there's more to it than that.

The Night Pattern covers OK at night, certainly an improvement over what existed previously. BUT...the Day Pattern packs more signal than the Night Pattern within the Chicago Metro area where the Arbitron Ratings are measured.

While WYLL isn't really a ratings driven format, it's brokered programs and advertisers want to reach as many people as possible and the Day Pattern does just that.

On rare emergency ocassions the Night Pattern has been used during the daytime, and we have had a few calls regarding reception problems in the heart of the city. So I don't think we ever want to use that pattern during the day time on a permanent basis.

When I've scanned the dial at night, WYLL is no problem for me on the car radio, or a walkman, unlike WRTO on the north side & downtown, where WOAI seems to bleedover quite a bit. NW Indiana is where I get slight bleedover of KSL on WYLL, and KSL overriding WYLL when in areas where it's mostly concrete.
