New tower, power increase for WROX Clarksdale??

Here's a link to the online edition of The Clarksdale Press Register. It quotes the GM as saying that the station is in line for a new antenna and ups their power to 6K. Anyone, anywhere seen or heard anything regarding this?? Any FCC filings that I may have missed or did the reporter simply take the GM's "word" verbatim and run to print with it?
Last time I checked the station (1450) was dark, the owner had been found "guilty" on all prior charges by the FCC regarding EBS violations, public files, etc. and was in the process of writing a sizeable check to the government. All that PLUS the last time I was in C'dale before they went dark their signal was oh so very, very pitiful.
Where is Early Wright, Doc Graves and Tom Reardon when you need them?

They must have taken the GMs word on it. A couple of things...

1. There are no pending filings for WROX. And, even if they were, 6kw is not a power available to a station on that frequency. That's a "local" channel, which allows a maximum of 1kw full-time. 6kw is typically a Class A FM ERP.

2. I checked the FM, WKXY. No filings there, either.

But, I suspect the GM was talking about an FM upgrade that might soon be coming. There are no engineering filings on-file after 2003. Perhaps they are fixin' to file one. Larry Fuss did the last job, maybe someone here knows Larry -- I haven't seen him in years -- and could ask him.

So, no. No big power coming from Clarksdale this week.

Perhaps. Or perhaps the newspaper reporter just didn't pay attention to what he was told. Everytime I've ever been interviewed for a newspaper story, what gets printed is usually not what I said.

The station has only been dark since June 5 and the FCC has been properly notified. And you don't know what you're talking about when you refer to "guilty" and "writing a check." Did you used to be a newspaper reporter?

New Armstrong 1 kw transmitter was installed in August of '04. Signal was great until it lost one of the modules in an ice storm around Christmas. Konarz never had it repaired.

Early Wright is dead. Once dead, people tend to stay that way. I don't know about the other two.

Re: New tower, power increases, and trips down Memory Lane.

Oh, my Gosh...

Larry's on here. Now, there's another trip down Amnesia Lane.

Larry... I suspect you don't remember me, but...

One year at the MAB (yes, MAB back then) you and I sat across from one another at the banquet in Biloxi. We spent the evening going back and forth, quizzing one another with such questions as:

"Name the CBS affiliate in San Francisco. Power and transmitter location, please."

"Name all VHF TVs in Boston."

Stuff like that...

Meanwhile Phil O'Bryan, Craig Dale, and my brother sat by wondering: first, why ANYONE cares, and SECOND, how we knew this stuff. Fun.

Geez... that has to be close to 20 years ago.

You know, I can attend the Pioneer's Breakfast now (assuming they still have one). Too bad I live in Memphis!

Yes, I was alerted to the fact that my name was being mentioned on the discussion boards, so I thought I'd jump into the fray.

Yea, I do remember. Was it Peter? Or was that your brother?

I moved to Las Vegas.

Larry, Larry, Larry. Please save me the BS.Who you trying to protect here and for what reason?? All the info is available to ANYBODY that cares to know. One word, eight letters. I-n-t-e-r-n-e-t.
And no, I'm not a local newpaper reporter. My credintials go way beyond that.

The signal sucked when I was home at Christmas. The signal sucked when I was home for Easter. The signal was GONE when I was home for Memorial Day. You do the math.

Who?? Oh, yeah. The new Delta radio prodigy. Please! I have sat on sofas with more common sense and more operating capitol than that individual.

The other two are dead as well, Einstein. ANYBODY who ever tried to put up a signal in that town would know those names as well as their own. Proves I have always been right in my assumtions of your POS operations.

There was a Notice of Forfeiture that had to do with certain violations during Konarz's LMA. As the licensee, I am liable. But because of the circumstances involved, it has been appealed. No check has been written.

Perhaps you are confusing the RF carrier ("the signal") with the audio quality. I was there on June 3, 4 and 5. The RF carrier was decent, even though the transmitter was operating on 300 watts. The audio, which was being fed to the transmitter via a web stream, was horrible.

LOL. No comment. BTW, operating capital is spelling with an A.

I never spent any time in Clarksdale, I had my hands full in Cleveland. I know who Tom Reardon is, but didn't know he was dead. Excuuuuuuuse me. Do you know who Robin Weaver, Sr. was or what WROX's original call-letters were? Ha, I thought not.

My radio stations were the best in the Delta bar none! Who the hell are you?

No check has been written...yet! Tick...tick...tick.

A really bad signal is a really bad signal regardless of how one tries to spin it.

Hands full in Cleveland doing what? It's still Cleveland,MS for god's sake.:)Spent all that time trying to figure out how to compete against Shurden radio???
That may have taken all of two minutes.

Well seems to be the bar has been set WAY too low for a long time. Bad verses really bad is still, at best...Bad. Your brand or radio sucks, too, Larry. No offense intented at all. But bad radio is bad radio wherever the signal is. And you know it. It's kinda like crowing about how's got the "biggest" small penis in the world.

I wasn't trying to spin it, just point out the facts. Yes, the audio sucked, but there was nothing wrong with the RF carrier. It won't be that way when it goes back on-air.

George Shurden has been retired for 14 years. Have you been living under a rock? I had four radio stations in Cleveland, one of which was at one time the highest-rated small market station in the state.

See above. At one time, WDTL-FM was the highest-rated small market station in the state. In Greenville, my KRKD-FM, with a tiny little 3000-watt signal coming from 20 miles across the river in Arkansas, beat both WIQQ and WDMS (100,000 watts) in Greenville! You are right, as a whole, radio in the Delta sucked, but my stations did not. We had a 3-person morning show on WDTL-FM, including Jim Gregory, who won an MAB award as Personality of the Year. We had a 2-person morning show on KZYQ in Greenville and simulcast on WZYQ in Cleveland that included Delta legend Charlie Ross.

Hiding behind an assumed name, huh? You know who I am, but I have no idea who you are. Probably just some tired old DJ who can't keep a job.

Larry Fuss, in my opinion, has done a lot for our industry. He's been innovative,he's taken risks others wouldn't,and he's obviously given a toot about what he's done. Jim, Joey and Charlie are all dear friends of mine. Joey is one of the finest harp blowers I've ever met. Charlie Ross may be a "Delta legend" due to his involvement with The Krackerjacks but to use the term "legend" in relation to radio is indeed a stretch at best.
BTW, is Joey still off on some Pacific Island??

Damn it, Larry, you nailed me. I'm simply a fat, balding, tired, un-employed, homeless, hungry, aging, old washed up jock who likes to hide behind an assumed name that lives under a rock in a van down by the river :)

Greg has nothing to do with the operation of the station in Cleveland. He's the GM of their stations in Clarksdale. Your reference to "Shurden Radio" is misplaced.

As noted in another post, Charlie is one of the many talented people who came through WDDT/Greenville back when it was a flamethrower. Years ago, Charlie jumped from Greenville to Dallas (KFJZ, when it too was a flamethrower). He also recorded a couple of songs with a group called Eternity's Children and had a couple of solo records in the mid 70s. He's listed right above Diana Ross in the Whitburn Top Pop Singles book.

You sound like one of those old DJ types who thinks that anything voice-tracked or delivered via satellite automatically qualifies as a "POS operation" (your term). Sorry, you're wrong!

Yes, Joey is still in American Samoa. He's the GM now. www.93khj.fm

Larry Fuss has NEVER operated a bad sounding radio station (even in Newton).

I worked for Larry for a year. It was a tough experience, but well worth it. He is by far the most organized person I've ever met.

By the way, you don't want him as a competitor. He lives, breathes and eats this stuff 24/7.

Just my 2 cents...but isn't that what these boards are all about?

My favorite Larry Fuss story was when he was PD at the Q and I was in high school... I told him that I couldn't make it in to work the overnight shift that weekend because I was sick at my stomach.... he told me to stick a cork in my ass and do the shift... which I did... (not the cork part)...

He also had a great stack of Penthouse magazines in his old station West of Meridian... as a 14 year old kid, I thought that was great.

Wish he'd warned me about working with Dean Pierce, though!
