Carrier on 98.3 Friday afternoon

arnoldevns

I think the new 98.3 was testing on Friday afternoon. I got a clear stereo signal with no programming in the early afternoon. I Never did hear a tone or ID though.

What is the coverage like? Any idea where the tower is?

KBOC's new site is located NNE of Decatur, where Wise, Cooke and Montague counties meet. That puts them about 60 miles northwest of downtown Dallas. Other rimshots that transmit from the same area are 93.7 KNOR, 96.7 KTYS, 99.1 KFZO, 101.7 KTCY, 105.7 KRNB and KZZA 106.7.

Here's a map showing KBOC's proposed coverage (but remember this is the "service area" contour, not the actual "city grade," which lies within the circle shown):

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1026406.html

Compare that with the service area contour of the Twister:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM561839.html

There's quite a difference between 98.3 (a Class C0) and 96.7 (a Class C). You can probably expect a signal from KBOC that's more like what you currently hear on KNOR 93.7, which struggles to make it into Dallas.

Expect it to be a class C here real soon

98.5 Ardmore will be moving to Apache Oklahoma and 98.1 Lawton will downgrade to 97.9 and loose some coverage to Make KBOC 98.3 100,000 Watts.<P ID="signature">______________

I think you're rushing things just a little. The application to move KJMZ from Lawton to Cache hasn't been approved yet, and KBOC has yet to apply for an upgrade to Class C. Something still could go wrong with this whole master plan, which has so far taken about five years.

There's one thing for certain, though. Just like what happened with 93.7, North Texas Radio Group will get it on the air, and then they will sell it, with or without the approval for the upgrade.

IF KBOC is a full C0, its already at 100,000 watts! (The height is the only difference...unless KBOC is a C0 at 2000ft and a reduced ERP...I have not looked at the FCC database so that may be the case)
But coverage between C0 and full C is not that much (out on the fringe maybe..but the 1mV and city grade really wont be much difference...not enough to really make a difference on the rcv end anyway)

KBOC's CP is for a C0, with 40,000 watts at 620 meters (2035 feet), on the same tower with Class C KTYS 96.7, which runs 90,000 watts at 2039 feet.

Ok, 40K vs 90K....thats about 3db or so......so what??? Coverage difference? NONE.....one weekend, when the Cowboy tower at Cedar Hill was still be outfitted, the three station on it at the time (97.1, 98.7 and 103.7) lowered power to 25% each...from 100KW to 25KW ERP

range difference down I45? No difference....AND the multipath in downtown was gone!! Running a full C at full power is not really the best thing in a lot of cases....and 3db is not enough to sneeze at....7-10db yes..but 3db? naw...I am wondering if they will be combining on an antenna on the tower or going with their own...either way, their overall coverage will be the same as Twister.

Actually the guy who Owns the Station or is going to Own or at least has something to do with it Lives In Oklahoma City and it Prolly will be Operated there In Dallas from what I am hering now I think it is funny that he is doing the same thing like he did In Oklahoma City with 103.5 KVSP.<P ID="signature">______________

CW, you're the engineer and I'm not. But if the 60dBu contour for KTYS is roughly 40 miles and the same contour for KBOC will be about 30 miles, I'd call that a big difference. It's also worth noting that where penetration of big buildings comes into play, they aren't all in in downtown Dallas. Surely being a full Class C is worth more than bragging rights, isn't it?

Let's just hope he doesn't try to do the same thing formatically that he did here in OKC with 103.5 as Service will hand him his ass if he tries to do so. 104.5 is so much better and is so entrenched he'd be makeing a huge mistake even trying to take them on.<P ID="signature">______________

My own personal tastes aside, my vote was, and still is for classic country on 98.3. Waylon, Willie and the Man in Black, George and Tammy, Merle, Marty and Tom T.; you know, what the Twister should have done. If they had, then by now they might have made their way out of the cellar and got some ratings respect.
