990 fires Doc Bryce

Well, it's official... I just got canned from KFCD as of Friday (6-3-5).

Many people were let go today from 990 and a very selected few chose to stay and ride it out. My hats off to those of you who decided to stick it out. Unfortunately I can't afford to run dry any longer, so I had no other choice but to be terminated.

Thursday we had a meeting where we were presented with a form to sign that determined our fate as an employee of the station. You had to sign in order to remain with the company. After several consultations I was advised not to sign leading to my termination.

So now I'm eating some crow and becoming a little more humble today, if anyone out there knows of some work available and you actually would be willing to vouch for a guy like me, let me know. Go to my website to contact me.

For now, I've got traffic, still have my prod. clients. There's a possibility to do production out in Kansas, but doubt that they'll pay what I'm asking for. If they can make me a reasonable offer, I would move out there in a heart beat!

I guess the next question is... Do I become bitter and start ripping radio just cause I'm on the beach like Murrow? ;) Just kidding Murrow, little topical humor there.

I all ready filled mine out and submitted it.

Besides. What was the point in signing the form?
How much longer can it stay afloat?
Not bitter. Just dissappointed that it all came down to lawyer tricks and threats.
I hope it's not all like this. I don't want to have to move back in with my folks.

Damn Doc .That sucks! Seriously, let me ask around and see if "we"have something coming soon. All indications point in that direction, but I want to firm it up before handing out empty promises. Only time I go to the beach is with the wife and child ;) Other than that, you know your stuff, you are very good on the air,and I can not see you being unemployed very long at all. Hang inthere bro' We are all in this together.

We certainly wish Doc well in his job search and may his down time be minimal. Not to cast any negative words Doc's way, but Ed's reference to Doc knowing his stuff and sounding good on the air is precisely enough to preclude Doc from employment with many broadcast companies. However, there are at least a few stations and groups that DO value such qualifications. Not many, but a few, at least. Good luck, Doc. >

What did you do at 990?

Unfortunately, 990 was a plane that was never built to fly long haul.

It was more like a kite.

Gives rise to the question of what kind of legal hocus-pocus corporate suits perpetrate on employees in these "sign or be shown the door" scams. Some companies, broadcast and others, have been known to put on the presssure and those caving in literally sign away the right to be paid or to in any way
"benefit from the company's resources," and to literally accept a "if we want to dump on you then you have to take it" clause in the provisions. Seems much better to let the carpet baggers do what they will with their "agreement" and walk out. Workers don't need that sort of abuse. Plus 990s coffers were already dry, at least as far as paying the staff (ownershiop/management no doubt took their cutt off the top, so there appears to be no percentage in sticking around. Workers have no reason to trust most corporate employers anymore. Look at what the airlines are doing to the pension funds of their retirees and others. The gold in the mine to the suits, the shaft to the people who actually make companies run.

I started there as the Morning drive board-op, then moved over to production Director. I did majority of the spots that ran on the station.

Whether it flew or not, it was something I had to take a chance on. Friends, colleges, and family all warned me of past performance. It was the only place in this town to get some fresh air checks from.

I'm not going to lie, or just say nice things about the station just cause I'm out looking for something new, but it was a fun place to work for. It was small town radio in big top radio. The people were great, everyone was easy to get along with. The politics were limited to almost nothing. Everyone knew everyone and no one was out trying to kill one another for the next big gig.

Like a bad ass party, everything must come to an end. If they make it back on the air, I'll go back and produce for them again. As long as I get paid fairly for my work, I could care less who I work for and where.

I wouldn't get too carried away with the corporate suits. They do what they have to do to make a profit. I do what I have to do to keep the lights, the phone, and the woman turned on!

I learned back in the late 80's that radio is unstable. Take what you can, get the most from your time, and work everyday as if it were your last. That's one of the reasons I left after '96. When I saw most of being replaced by people off the streets, I couldn't understand at 23 why would you hire someone with no experience when we were all sitting there with a license and experience.

I have a 3rd phone that hangs on the wall now as a souvenir of the old days. Doesn't mean a thing today, but I can look at it and know that I'm one of the last of many my age that actually have one. Get a few people working at a station and pile them in to a room. Ask how many have a license and do not. You'll see a room divide in seconds. Not that it effects the work place, just those with a license like to get together and reminisce of the old days back when.

As for Corporate radio and all the suits that have no idea what we as programmers and the suits that were programmers and forgot, I'll pick up my stuff, go back to the station and do it all over again. I thought I would quit and leave again and go back to Corporate America. I did that for three days and ran right back to radio. Either I'm glutton for punishment, or I'm so blind, that I refuse to see what toll radio takes on me and ask for more.

As for the pension, start putting your cash in to your own 401K and if you hate working "for the man" start your own bidness. Wait till they see what they take out for taxes and then you really have something to gripe about!

It sucks, but it's the nature of the beast. Not the first, sure not to be the last!

I appreciate you putting some feelers out there in my name. I put a lot of pride in to what I do even if it's just running a board during Dr. Laura.

My PD's in the past have never really chewed me out for screwing up on the air, cause they know that when they enter that Control room, I'm taking it out on my self. Why bother double punishing me?

Anything you can do to help, I promise to return the favor in the future. Just ask other around here that I helped cause they got my back in the past. I can two in here off the top of my head. I pride myself also on taking care of close co-workers/friends.

-Doc

P.S. Don't ask my enemies if I helped them. They'll just tell you I helped them to the closest stair well... There might be some truth there!

I forgot to mention good luck. Got a feeling you will land on your feet -- and quickly.

It is too bad 990 did not promote itself much. Maybe it would not have mattered, but it would have been worth a try.

Many people in the area simply did not know what 990 AM or Mainstreet Radio was.

Man, dude, that blows. I so sorry. McCarty is a great guy and I am sure he'll do what he can hours wise when he can. Ya know? I loved working there, everyone was really great. And I'm sure you'll end up with something real quick. :)

Good luck to ya!

Chaos, panic, disorder...my work here is done!!</P>

Doc,

Sorry to hear of your firing. I'm not in the market anymore...but we did work together on Carpenter in the land of dysfunction. You were always doin your job well and it was greatly appreciated. Now I am owned and operated by my Master, who does with me as he chooses in a place called paradise. See what Hot talk does to a person? **smack!** LOL.

Good luck Doc. It sucks to get fired, but what goes around comes around. It's just a matter of time.

Doc:

I only got to work with you a couple of times, and I have to say what you brought to the table at 990 will be missed there-- but somewhere else will pick you up! I can almost count on that!... I wish you well-- I hope you find something soon- and you are right about having your business... sometimes you have to make your own destiny! ITS the only thing we have absolute Control over.

If you need anything-- all you have to do is ASK! I will be more than glad to do whatever it takes to help you out!

Best to you DOC!

Dave Michaels!

funny, I was just thinking about you the other day wondering where you and *** landed. After reading the below, I just thought to myself "WOOOOOOW!"

Hope all is well on your end, thanks for the compliments and best wishes.

Don't get me wrong in here, I'm not whining at all about what happened. I think that how everything played out is truly unique, but other that that I know you haven't arrived till you've been fired. Just want to see who all out there's willing to help me land somewhere else is the main reason why I posted.

Those of you who have emailed anonymously with a list of possibilities, I say many thanks for the tips! and thanks to the one person who did I.D. themselves with great tips. You know who you are, and I have your back if you ever need anything! ;)

Sorry, So what have you been up to these days other than being a slave? You still in Dallas? and what's up with this slave thing? You find a "Sugar Daddy"?

Can't wait to hear this reply ROFL

Thanks for the wishes! funny thing about McCarty, I've heard lots about him, everyone says that he a stand up guy, great to work for.

I must say, he's got to be one of the easiest to work for. Do what he expects of ya, and he the easiest guy to work for. I'm actually having fun doing traffic! It's different, and the mind set over here is much different. You have bill boards instead of traditional spots, there's no transmitter logs or legals to keep up with.

make your beat calls, create your report, wait for your queue and you're done! This job goes by real fast. There's no production to do, you just come in, run your shift and you're out the door!

Don't get me wrong, I still hunger for pre and post show prep.

Soooo. How's it going out there in Colorado? You still like it? I hear Gay Steven from The Wild 100 days is out in your neck of the woods.
