Audacy To Divest Magic 106.3

BECAUSE SOROS IS BUYING US!!!!
Ask any retired person in the UK how they feel about what Soros' monetary maneuvers did to their income and you can see why he is such a polarizing individual.

On the other hand, his investments in broadcasting seem to be totally passive with no political agenda at all. So, at least in our country, those criticisms are, so far, unfounded.

Example: more than a year after the Soros-owned groups financed LMN, there is still not one liberal or progressive program that has been added anywhere. If, as many suspected (including, incorrectly, myself) they bought the station group from Televisa to prepare for the 2024 presidential campaign, they are way to late for that to be their objective.

Speaking of LMN, I wanna drop this here real quick.

I remember hearing back in mid-Feb that Salem is still interested in either leasing or outright purchasing WADO now that LMN failed to purchase the frequency if they exit bankruptcy, but it's just a rumor.

LMN did not "fail to purchase" WADO. The sale was separated for a separate closing due to some issues with the transmitter site in the Meadowlands which could not be resolved along with the closing on the other stations.

As it stands now, WADO is still "for sale" although apparently LMN will have an option on it if the issue is resolved.

There is, in fact, some chatter (meaning: rumors, unconfirmed) about Audacy absorbing LMN for operating efficiency.

This makes me wonder, if Audacy were in control of the LMN stations, would they remain the same? Would they be flipped? This would make things tighter between WAXY and WAQI, of course, one of them would HAVE to flip.

I see Summit owns a few Hot AC’s, but only one mainstream AC which is located in Omaha. Seems pretty similar to Magic, and they have Murphy, Sam, and Jodi as well.

Not meaning to disrespect the opinion of anyone here.
My thoughts-

1. As Lance said "Due to changes in the amount of stations in the Greenville/Spartanburg market,..."
2. Multiple Ownership rules and policy. Not specifically one company.
3. Stanley Druckenmiller and George Soros made a great trade in 1992. It could have just as easily gone the other way.
4. Any person or entity that can act on a large economic scale can cause great change in the lives of many people. That action is often enabled by the collective action of many people in a society.
5. In 1992 Druckenmiller and Soros were not evil. They put on a trade based on a situation created by the collective action of every adult in the UK who voted or participated in government. Other traders took the position, but Soros has the gift of seeing the macro, and he told Druckenmiller to go big. Really big.

What does this have to do with radio? Soros or his managers see value in radio, and took a position in it.

Since we know the frequency known as 106.3 needs to be sold off I'm kinda curious as to how magic was billing compared to The Planet? Would or could a magic move to 93.3 be possible? I know it's not likely, but could it happen.

I don’t know about the billing, but every indication seems to have been that Audacy didn’t want to or see a reason to invest in Magic. They left it to die on 98.9, moved it to 106.3 with little promotion and let it get very stale, and it’s just now getting back above a 3 share. My argument was always WORD should have gone to 93.3, and Planet 106.3, leaving Magic at 98.9. I don’t see them moving Magic again, especially since they’ve let air staff go.

If Magic gets new ownership that keeps the format, it could be the best thing that could happen with it. Audacy’s been checked out on it for ages. It’s a good signal for a format like AC with a little effort. If the format isn’t kept, iHeart could go for mainstream AC on 104.9. I don’t think it would be too close for comfort with 102.5, especially with its classic rock lean.

Does the station being put in a divesture trust preclude Audacy from trying to do a station swap for a station(s) in another market?
No. Audacy can even turn around and sell one of their other Greenville FMs and then pull WSPA-FM back from the trust.

If Summit wanted to play ball, it’s notable there are two other markets where Audacy and Summit both have stations - Richmond and Wichita. Both companies appear to be potentially maxed out in both markets, but who knows what could potentially happen. I do think VCY is a far stretch considering they’re generally looking for “bargain” stations and currently don’t have anything in the southeast. Their only east coast station is in DE. Way Media, however, does…but would a seventh full powered signal (counting 89.3, 94.5, 95.5/103.3, 103.9, 106.9 playing CCM have any chance of getting meaningful donations or listeners to get their message? I also wonder how much $ The Power Foundation has. They currently don’t have any signals anywhere on par with 106.3. Most are translators or rural class A’s, etc.

Also, someone mentioned 1540 AM in Pickens was no longer on the air, but it is - it’s running a Spanish Christian format as WBPB. WTBI-FM sold it, but they’re still on the air.

Im thinking Augusta GA based GNN "Good News Radio" might be interested. It would give the Christian talk network full upstate coverage. 106.3 would complement 96.7 WJNA Anderson-Clemson to the west and upcoming station 103.5 WZSN Greenwood to the south.

Dang, I didn’t see Sunny 103.5 was sold. That’s sad. Greenwood has lost almost all of their local radio except for the clown show 1450/98.5.

GNN could be a contender for 106.3, they bought 95.3 in Columbia several years ago. It would probably be the priciest acquisition they’ve made considering the population 106.3 covers vs. what other signals they’ve acquired do. If 106.3 went non-comm GSP would have a low amount of commercial FM signals compared to other markets (not counting translators) around it. Sad.

WZLA has become a fantastic local station in Greenwood.

I didn't see this. So is anyone in Columbia doing black gospel?

GNN bought 105.3 FM near Myrtle Beach. It has a great signal at least in the rural areas. 105.5 Hank FM blocks it in Myrtle Beach proper and WDAR, also at 105.5, probably does the same close to Florence.

WFMV still does on AM. They have a couple of translators on FM now so it didn’t technically go away, it just moved. This happened back in early 2020.

Aside from 95.3 in Columbia, GNN has bought rural or rimshot signals generally. I wouldn’t rule them out as a contender for 106.3, but if they just paid $800k for a C3 in Greenwood that covers much less population than WSPA-FM, I don’t know if it fits in to their agenda. I’m sure 106.3 would be valued at much more than 103.5 WZSN. Greenville and Spartanburg already have BBN on 91.1, Truth Network on 96.9, WTBI on 91.5, which are all similar to GNN, VCY, etc. Very conservative Christian programming (one of GNN’s show’s topics last week was people aren’t having enough babies). It seems to me it would be very difficult for another religious broadcaster to be able to get enough new listeners to get donations or listeners of any sort. Everything is covered two times over.

WZLA is Abbeville centric, always has been, studios are in Abbeville, about 1/2 mile up the road from the Hwy 72/28 intersection, right near the phone company office
